The Inpatient Gastroenterology Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant provides specialized inpatient care for patients with gastrointestinal, hepatic, biliary, and pancreatic disorders. Working collaboratively with gastroenterologists and the multidisciplinary hospital team, this role supports consultation services, ongoing inpatient management, and coordination of care for medically complex patients.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesProvide inpatient gastroenterology consultation and follow-up care
Evaluate and manage patients with acute and chronic GI conditions, including GI bleeding, inflammatory bowel disease, liver disease, pancreatitis, and bowel obstruction
Perform comprehensive histories, physical examinations, and daily patient assessments
Develop and implement care plans in collaboration with supervising gastroenterologists
Manage medications and supportive therapies related to gastrointestinal conditions
Interpret laboratory data, imaging studies, and diagnostic results relevant to GI care
Assist with pre- and post-procedure care for endoscopic and interventional procedures
Coordinate care with hospitalists, surgeons, interventional radiology, nutrition services, and nursing staff
Educate patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, and follow-up care
Participate in interdisciplinary rounds and discharge planning
Maintain accurate, timely clinical documentation in the electronic medical record
Participate in quality improvement, patient safety, and utilization initiatives
Comply with all regulatory, accreditation, and professional standards
Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program
Current NP or PA certification and state licensure
Eligibility for hospital credentialing and privileging
DEA registration or eligibility
Prior experience or specialized training in gastroenterology or inpatient medicine preferred
Strong clinical assessment and inpatient management skills
Knowledge of gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary disorders
Ability to manage complex, acutely ill patients
Excellent communication and interdisciplinary collaboration skills
Strong organizational and documentation abilities
Commitment to evidence-based, patient-centered care
Acute care hospital inpatient units
GI consultation services with daytime, weekend, or on-call coverage as required
Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout hospital units
Manual dexterity for bedside assessments and procedures
Visual and auditory acuity sufficient for patient evaluation and interpretation of diagnostic data
