Job Title: HVAC Principal Design Engineer

Employment Type: Contract

Pay Rate: $65.00 – $70.00 per hour

Preferred: Local candidates to Greenville, SC

About the Role
We are seeking an experienced HVAC Principal Design Engineer to join our team onsite in Greenville, South Carolina. This is a senior-level engineering role responsible for leading HVAC system design efforts, providing technical oversight, and ensuring high-quality execution across complex engineering projects.

The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in HVAC system design, advanced engineering analysis, and EPC project execution. This role requires strong leadership capabilities, the ability to solve complex technical challenges, and experience working in multidisciplinary environments.

Key Responsibilities

Lead HVAC design and engineering activities for complex industrial or infrastructure projects.

Provide technical leadership and guidance to engineers and designers on assigned projects.

Develop and review HVAC specifications, design criteria, and engineering deliverables.

Perform and verify advanced engineering calculations, including HVAC load calculations and airflow analysis.

Design HVAC systems including ductwork layouts, air handling systems, and utility systems (chillers, boilers, cooling towers, etc.).

Develop HVAC airflow diagrams, P&IDs, and sequence of operations narratives.

Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, including mechanical, electrical, structural, and project management.

Interface with clients, vendors, and subcontractors to resolve technical issues and ensure alignment.

Support procurement activities including scope development, technical bid evaluations, and vendor submittal reviews.

Provide technical support during construction, including RFIs and field design changes.

Develop project estimates, schedules, progress reports, and resource forecasts.

Ensure all work is executed in compliance with project scope, schedule, cost, and quality requirements.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Minimum 15 years of HVAC engineering/design experience.

Advanced knowledge of HVAC system design, including:

HVAC load calculations

Airflow and instrumentation diagrams

Equipment sizing and specification (AHUs, chillers, boilers, etc.)

Ductwork sizing, routing, and system layout

Strong experience developing HVAC specifications and design documentation.

Working knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local codes and standards.

Experience supporting large EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) projects.

Strong ability to analyze and solve complex technical problems independently.

Effective communication skills with stakeholders including clients, vendors, and project teams.

Preferred Qualifications

Professional Engineer (PE) license.

Experience supporting nuclear or Department of Energy (DOE) projects.

Familiarity with ASME NQA-1 or nuclear quality standards.

Experience with 3D modeling and CADD tools in a multi-discipline environment.

Demonstrated experience leading engineering teams and managing large-scale projects.

Practical field or construction experience.
