Role Summary
As a data science intern in our Hockey Strategy and Analytics group, you’ll be working closely with our analytics team to help build foundational statistical models. Candidates will have the opportunity to gain experience with statistical programming and combine quantitative skills with hockey domain knowledge to assist with hockey operations decision making.

Learning Objectives

Gain experience and understanding of how data science and statistical modeling are applied within a professional hockey operations environment to inform real-world decision making.

Apply academic knowledge in statistics and programming to real-world hockey research questions spanning player evaluation, roster construction, and in-game strategy.

Develop professional communication skills by translating complex analytical findings into clear, actionable insights for non-technical hockey operations stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities And Projects

Support development of efficient, timely, and actionable data-driven decisions that enhance current and future performance across Hockey Operations.

Build statistical models to answer hockey research questions.

Work collaboratively with stakeholders throughout Hockey Operations to formulate hypotheses, analyze data, and effectively deliver insights to optimize player evaluation, acquisition, development, roster construction, in-game strategy, and more.

Work collaboratively with the Hockey Systems team to help integrate work into internal applications and maintain data quality across internal and external data sources.

Communicate findings through written reports, presentations, and informal conversations.

Expected Outcomes / Deliverables

Complete at least one independent or semi-independent analytical research project that addresses a defined hockey operations question, from hypothesis formulation through final delivery of findings.

Contribute meaningfully to ongoing model development or data infrastructure efforts within the Hockey Strategy and Analytics group.

Demonstrate growth in the ability to independently scope analytical problems, select appropriate methodologies, and communicate results effectively.

Deliver clean, well-documented code that adheres to team standards and can be maintained or built upon after the internship concludes.

Qualifications & Requirements

Currently enrolled in or recently graduated with a bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Finance, Business Analytics, or related fields.

Proficiency with one or more statistical programming languages, preferably Python.

Experience with SQL.

Demonstrated experience with statistical modeling through coursework or personal projects.

No previous hockey experience required, but demonstrated interest in hockey preferred.
