Summary
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit their EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval awards up to $200,000 for an eligibility period of one to five years, determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.
Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
United States Citizenship: Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy.
Education and/or Experience: The individual must meet at least one of the following requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in occupational therapy and two (2) years of experience as an occupational therapist.
Bachelor’s degree in occupational therapy and two (2) full years of graduate education in a related field.
Master’s degree or higher in occupational therapy.
The baccalaureate degree must be from an approved program prior to the AOTA January 1, 2005 decision that ACOTE would only accredit master or doctoral degree programs in occupational therapy.
Graduates of foreign occupational therapy programs meet the requirements of subparagraph 3b(2) if they have a current full, active and unrestricted license referred to in subparagraph 3e of this appendix.
Candidates must possess a current NBCOT certification as an OT.
Candidates must possess a full, current and unrestricted state license to practice occupational therapy in the United States or District of Columbia.
Physical requirements are defined in VA Directive and Handbook 5019.
Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f).
Exceptions for Graduate Occupational Therapists: OT graduates from an approved occupational therapy program who otherwise meet the minimum qualification requirements but who do not possess NBCOT certification and/or state licensure may be appointed on a temporary appointment not to exceed two years.
Duties
Serve as the rehabilitation therapy expert for the HBPC/MFH interdisciplinary treatment team, administering treatment for outpatient populations with acute and chronic conditions (e.g., strokes, amputees, joint replacements, neurological, respiratory, cardiac rehabilitation).
Provide professional knowledge of occupational therapy concepts, principles and practices to deliver clinical services, supervise or train students and therapists, or conduct research.
Develop treatment plans to restore or compensate skills, ensuring safety and effectiveness of activities of daily living.
Evaluate Veteran needs and skills, develop therapeutic treatment programs, and implement occupational therapy interventions, including ADL evaluations, equipment modification and home safety assessments.
Maintain complete documentation of assessments, re‑assessments, care plans, and related activities.
Complete Functional Independent Mobility (FIM) tests and report results to Veteran, caregiver and treatment team.
Develop and coordinate educational materials for caregivers and Veterans in accordance with Joint Accreditation Home Care standards.
Consult with other HBPC staff and hospital disciplines as needed.
Support performance improvement activities by participating in development of rehabilitation care indicators, evaluating outcomes and initiating corrective actions.
Assist in planning and developing home safety and fall‑risk related policies and procedures.
Work schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm. Position is not teleworkable and not virtual.
