Job Summary
Performs all stat and routine analyses offered by the laboratory. Recognizes the interdependency of tests and has knowledge of physiological conditions affecting test results. Operates and maintains the laboratory equipment. Interprets quality control data and corrects errors following laboratory policies.
Education and Work Experience
Bachelor’s Degree in medical technology, clinical laboratory science, microbiology, cell biology, biochemistry, biological sciences, chemical sciences, or allied health technologies: Required
General laboratory experience: Required
Hospital experience: Preferred
Licenses and Certifications
Valid Clinical Laboratory Scientist, Clinical Microbiologist, or Public Health Microbiologist license in state of employment: Required
Current certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent: Preferred
Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) or Clinical Microbiologist Scientist (MTE) or Public Health Microbiologist (PHM): Required
Essential Functions
Follows positive patient identification policy and demonstrates awareness of factors that influence test results for all patient age groups. Performs and evaluates quality control per lab policy, implements out‑of‑control plans, and documents corrective actions. Accurately records and reports results using manual requisitions and the computer system.
Performs each test method in a quality‑oriented, professional manner, including microscopic, immunologic, bacteriologic assays, and other assigned methods. Maintains knowledge of specimen collection, patient preparation, labeling, handling, preservation, transportation, and storage. Performs preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and calibration procedures. Assists in reagent preparation and maintains adequate reagent and supply levels. Follows universal precautions to ensure safety.
Reviews and evaluates the validity and accuracy of test results, recognizing interdependencies, physiological conditions, patient age, controls, linearity errors, instrument codes, delta checks, and more. Follows policy for reporting panic values and correcting errors.
Assists the laboratory during unusual workloads, supervises assistants and clerks, and may direct daily activities in the absence of the lead technologist. Collaborates with pharmacy, nursing, providers, and infection prevention as needed.
Handles emergency situations, including power failure, refrigerator and freezer operation, microbiology instrument handling, MediAlert, fire, chemical spills, and SDS sheet use.
Performs other job‑related duties as assigned.
