Job Summary
The Patient Care Tech, under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practicing Nurse (LPN), performs patient care tasks and procedures necessary to provide for the care, comfort, and safety of patients. The role demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age(s) of the patients served on the assigned unit.

Responsibilities And Essential Functions

Patient & Visitor Interactions / Customer Service / Hourly Rounding : The PCT will interact with patients and visitors, answer patient call lights, phones, assist visitors within the facility, and perform purposeful hourly rounding on all assigned patients.

Patient Safe Handling / Ambulation / Repositioning : The PCT will learn and apply patient safe handling skills, assist in ambulation of patients, and help nursing staff with transferring, lifting, or repositioning patients using Safe Patient Handling equipment.

Basic Nursing Care – ADLs : The PCT will provide basic care under the supervision of an RN/LPN, including bathing, grooming, oral care, eating, feeding, use of bedpan or urinal, positioning, responding to patient call lights, bed making, etc., while following safety policies.

Admission / Discharge / Transfers : The PCT will assist with room set up, welcome new patients, and handle discharging or transferring patients. The PCT will transport patients to destinations safely and update patients regularly.

Procedures and Treatments : The PCT will complete and document patient care activities such as ADL, vital signs, weights, intake & output, and calorie counts according to policy. The PCT will perform procedures (e.g., urinary catheter removal, ECGs, wound care, dressing changes) under the nurse’s direction, notify appropriate personnel of responses or questions, collect non‑sterile specimens, and perform point of care blood sugar tests.

Care Companion / Sitter / Observer : The PCT may be asked by the RN or LPN to remain with a patient to keep them safe.

Department Specific Tasks : The PCT will support the nursing team with indirect patient care activities such as restocking equipment/linens, cleaning equipment, answering and relaying telephone calls, filing, maintaining records, retrieving supplies, specimens, instruments, and test results.

Minimum Requirements

Minimum Education Requirements

Eligible to work in the US

Completion of an accredited certified nursing assistant (CNA) training course preferred

Completion of at least one nursing clinical rotation in medical or surgical nursing preferred

Minimum Licensure Requirements

Current BLS certification for the Healthcare Provider issued by the American Heart Association. If not current, must be obtained within 90 days of hire.

Minimum Work Experience

No experience required.

Excellent interpersonal skills including teamwork, prioritization, and following through on directions.

Commitment to the welfare of patients and families.

Attend in‑depth orientation for patient care skill tasks.

Observe all fire and safety procedures and patient experience standards.

Working Conditions

Environment includes normal mental, visual, auditory attention, manual dexterity required for sustained periods, visual acuity to assess patients and read charts, auditory acuity for communication.

Potential exposure to blood, body fluids, hazardous chemicals.

Must work under pressure to meet patient care needs.

Physical Demands

When in the clinical environment, must use appropriate patient movement equipment for lifts and transfers; may need to lift up to 50 pounds in urgent events. Wear N95 mask/PAPR and other PPE. Sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, lifting throughout shift.

Technical Skills

Basic computer skills required.
