Role Overview
Newport News Shipbuilding is hiring Shipfitters with a minimum of 3 years of experience to perform shipbuilding fabrication and repair work. Responsibilities
Fitters read and interpret blueprints or plans to place, maneuver, or fabricate steel structures or hull components of ships. They measure, cut, grind, fit, align, and tack weld parts from small to large assemblies, and they build interior structures such as hatches, doors, and bulkheads. Fitters are expected to work at extreme heights, crawl in confined spaces, and perform tasks in diverse weather conditions. Work may be performed in shops, platens, concrete and metal structures, dry-docks, and onboard ships for new construction, repair, and overhaul.
Must Have
Minimum 1 year of fitting/fabrication experience
Ability to work at extreme heights or in small confined spaces
Ability to kneel, squat, crawl, bend, stoop, and climb
Ability to lift 40 lbs and pass a respirator fit test
Availability to work assigned shifts as production needs
Pass a Physical Agility Test
Nice to Have
High school graduate or equivalent
Completion of welding or HVAC certification or trades training from an industry certified trade school or program
