Summary Of Job Function
Assumes responsibility for receiving and determining acceptability of all specimens received in the Department of Pathology.
Prepares specimens according to designated protocol for each laboratory procedure.
Engages in computer activity for the Laboratory Information System and the Hospital Information System.
Obtains blood and non‑blood specimens from inpatients, outpatients, and outreach by venipuncture or micro collections.
Contributes to section productivity and cost effectiveness.
Recognizes situations that require referral to Technical Supervisor, Manager, Laboratory Director, or Chief of Section.
Performs tasks at inpatient, outpatient, and send‑out locations while maintaining attention to detail during patient interactions.
Works in nursing home locations when assigned to outreach.
Uses proper patient identification methods and two identifiers.
Follows legal requirements for drawing blood, handling specimen samples, and legal equipment use.
Applies effective venipuncture techniques and testing protocols.
Maintains superb dexterity and hand‑eye coordination.
Communicates verbally and in writing with patients and staff.
Performs additional tasks as requested by the Chairman of Pathology or designee.
Required Qualifications/Education/Training/Certification/Licensure
High school graduate or equivalent.
Basic Life Support certification.
Valid driver license and insurance for outreach phlebotomists.
Preferred Qualifications
Completion of a recognized phlebotomy course in phlebotomy and or medical assistant or equivalent.
Certification with an accredited agency such as the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians or the National Phlebotomy Association.
One year of practical phlebotomy experience.
Successful completion of all orientation programs.
Work Environment and Hazards
Works in clinical laboratory and patient care areas.
Requires strict compliance with policies and procedures.
Exposes employee to stressful interactions with patients, families, physicians, and other hospital personnel.
Continuous exposure to blood, body fluids, infectious patients, chemical agents, hazardous waste, risk of needle injury or harm from needle sticks, and unpleasant environment.
Physical demands: must meet ADA requirements; prolonged standing, moderate walking, and occasional lifting up to 15 pounds.
Frequent contact with patients, physicians, nursing departments, and hospital personnel.
Job Specific Requirements Of Position
Adheres to all policies regarding safe handling of specimens and cleanliness of accessioning area and equipment.
Follows infection control practices and procedures.
Maintains safe handling/disposal of specimens, chemicals, biohazardous materials, and sharps.
Answers telephone in a timely manner within hospital guidelines.
Applies specimen labels at patient bedside acknowledging full name, hospital number, date, time of collection and other required data.
Transports specimens back to the department.
Performs centrifugation, pipetting, and specimen splitting for large volume analyzers.
Completes mandatory and continuing education in a timely manner.
Greets patients and families, verifies patient identification, and explains procedures.
Logs specimens into the Pathology Department via Hospital Information System and Laboratory Information System.
Maintains positive patient identification throughout the specimen collection process.
Prepares all materials for specimen collection and labeling before approaching the patient.
Performs venipuncture or micro collection in accordance with departmental and institutional procedures.
Reviews policies, procedure, and instrument manuals regularly to ensure compliance.
Stocks phlebotomy supplies and equipment, ensures expiration dates are met.
Washes hands before and after each patient.
Maintains excellent bedside manners and effective communication with patients.
Handles billing and registration information accurately via telephone or in person.
Ensures patient privacy and confidentiality in accordance with regulations.
Prepares specimens for safe storage and transport.
