Responsibilities

Assess individual nutritional status and intervention needs by evaluating laboratory values, growth patterns, dietary, medical histories and socioeconomic status of patients in health department services.

Apply federal and state regulations to determine eligibility and provide required nutrition services for participants in the WIC Supplemental Food and Nutrition Program.

Provide nutrition counseling to patients in the WIC Program and other Board of Health areas, including maternal, child, and women’s health programs.

Offer referrals to other health department services and public or private agencies as indicated by assessment.

Monitor WIC clinics using the State WIC Unit Administrative Review Form; complete monthly reviews and document results for the WIC Coordinator.

Identify and manage WIC patients requiring intensive counseling for complex nutrition problems (e.g., growth retardation, food allergies, formula intolerance, iron deficiency, inborn errors of metabolism). Provide counseling for other patients with obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and anemia.

Plan and implement group nutrition education activities in Board of Health clinics and programs and in other community agencies on topics such as healthy eating, economical food purchasing, food preparation, and menu planning.

Plan and conduct in‑service education programs for Board of Health staff, WIC clerical team, public health nurses, and staff of community agencies (e.g., Cooperative Extension Services, Department of Family and Children Services).

Select, develop, and prepare nutrition education materials for patients, staff, other community agencies, and the general public; collaborate with mass media to promote accurate nutrition information.

Document activities and individual counseling in the patient medical record using the SOAP format; record group nutrition education; prepare monthly reports of accomplishments.

Monitor effectiveness of Board of Health nutrition programs through internal audits, patient questionnaires, site visits to WIC vendors, and make referrals as per established procedures.

Collect data necessary to evaluate nutrition program needs in DeKalb County.

Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in dietetics, human nutrition, foods and nutrition, nutrition education, food systems management, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university.

Verification statement of completion of a didactic program accredited by The Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics and two (2) years of job‑related experience providing nutrition care to groups and individuals.

OR

Two (2) years of experience at the lower level Dietitian/Nutritionist 1 (HCP020) or an equivalent position.
