
Mental Health Technician - MH/BH (PRN Only)

Responsibilities
This role supports Kempsville Center for Behavioral Health, a 106‑bed behavioral health facility accredited by The Joint Commission and licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia and the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services.
Position Description
The Mental Health Technician serves as a role model for patients/residents, helping them learn socially effective values, attitudes, and behaviors. The Technician ensures the environment remains safe and maintains a positive, normative culture throughout the facility. This role contributes to the formulation, implementation, and revision of individual treatment plans and promotes cognitive, social, physical, and emotional development to equip patients/residents with the knowledge and skills needed to achieve treatment goals.
Job Duties
Read and interpret treatment plans for patients/residents; develop strategies to help patients learn acceptable behaviors.
Develop and facilitate group sessions to implement skill acquisition and behavior reduction plans aligned with individual treatment plans.
Observe, record, and report patient behaviors, write detailed progress notes, and communicate with the multidisciplinary treatment team to identify, implement, and attain treatment goals.
Assist with behavior management and crisis intervention by creating learning opportunities that support a positive culture and using appropriate intervention techniques.
Utilize established mechanisms to enhance communication among staff (shift reports, team logs, meetings).
Conduct continuous rounding to assess and monitor patients per doctor’s orders and milieu, proactively preventing or responding to potential crisis situations.
Provide consistent service delivery by treating patients, families, and colleagues with respect, communicating appropriately, and maintaining appropriate boundaries.

Qualifications
Associate’s degree in psychology, human services, early childhood education, social sciences, or a related field.
Or, at least 6 months of experience working directly with children in a therapeutic setting.
Or, QMHP-C certification with no prior experience.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to remain calm and de‑escalate situations with patients.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to maintain strong interpersonal relationships and confidentiality.
Working knowledge of behavior management techniques.
Broad understanding of common mental health diagnoses (anxiety, depression, psychosis, ADHD, bipolar, suicide risk, etc.).
Shift Details
PRN with rotating weekends and holidays.
Physical Requirements
Stand, squat, kneel, sit, and lie on the floor for extended periods; lift up to 50 lb.; read, write, speak, and listen clearly. Must be 21 years of age or older.
