Summary
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval – award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.
Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
United States Citizenship: Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy.
Education: Master’s degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).
Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the School of Social Work is fully accredited.
A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master’s degree in social work.

Licensure: Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS‑0185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master’s degree level.

May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Grade Determinations: GS‑11 – Experience and Licensure: Appointment to the GS‑11 grade level requires completion of a minimum of one year of post‑MSW experience equivalent to the GS‑9 grade level in health care or other social work‑related settings (VA or non‑VA experience) and licensure or certification at the independent practice level.
In addition to meeting basic requirements a doctoral degree in social work from a school of social work may be substituted for the required one year of professional social work experience in a clinical setting.

Knowledge of community resources and ability to make appropriate referrals to community and other governmental agencies for services.
Skill in independently conducting psychosocial assessments and treatment interventions for a wide variety of individuals from diverse socio‑economic, cultural, ethnic and educational backgrounds.
Knowledge of medical and mental health diagnoses, disabilities and treatment procedures (acute, chronic and traumatic illnesses/injuries; common medications and their effects/side effects; medical terminology) to formulate a treatment plan.
Skill in independently implementing different treatment modalities with individuals, families and groups experiencing a variety of psychiatric, medical and social problems to achieve treatment goals.
Ability to provide consultation services to new social workers, social work graduate students and other staff about psychosocial needs of patients and the impact of psychosocial problems on health care and compliance with treatment.

Provides a DSM diagnosis to determine the psychosocial functioning and needs of Veterans and/or their families.
Provides emergency/crisis interventions that stabilize Veterans.
Engages in rapid assessments and develops crisis management plans.
Provides psychotherapy as individual, group and/or family interventions when clinically indicated and of therapeutic benefit to recipients.
Is willing to be successfully trained and implement evidence‑based psychotherapies.
Interventions emphasize development of a positive and appropriate therapeutic relationship sensitive to clinical, cultural, developmental and spiritual needs of Veterans.
Interventions are empirically supported and/or theoretically appropriate.
Treatment is arranged in appropriate intervals over an appropriate span of time.
Provides consultation to other treatment teams and staff about psychosocial needs of Veterans and/or their families and the impact of those needs on health care planning, compliance with treatment and discharge planning.
Documents direct Veteran care for a minimum of 80% of the time allotted to direct care in the clinician's weekly profile.
This includes individual therapy, groups, family therapy, couples’ therapy and direct clinical phone calls with the Veteran.
Establishes and maintains effective therapeutic relationships with Veterans and/or their families.
Works independently with Veterans and their families experiencing a wide range of complicated medical, psychiatric, emotional, behavioral and psychosocial problems.
Possesses thorough knowledge of medical and mental health diagnoses, disabilities and treatment procedures (acute, chronic and traumatic illnesses; common medications and their effects/side effects; medical terminology).
Facilitates discharge planning through collaboration with Veterans and their families and interdisciplinary treatment team members to ensure timely execution of appropriate discharge plans.
Provides consultation and education to Veterans and their families regarding community resources, VA benefits, specialty programs and advance directives.
Maintains knowledge of Veteran benefits and services, community resources and processes for making appropriate referrals to community and other governmental programs or agencies.
Provides case management services to Veterans and their families throughout the continuum of care.
Utilizes principles of human growth and development over the life span to assist Veterans in coping with loss and grief from disability and terminal illness.
Work schedule: 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Monday – Friday.
