Patient Care Tech - HVU - Pool/Per Diem

Position Summary
As an integral part of the patient care team, the Patient Care Technician performs direct and indirect patient care functions under the supervision of licensed personnel.

Responsibilities

Assist patients with personal care needs and participate in the plan of care.

Collect observations and data, and communicate them to the Clinical Associate.

Collect test specimens according to established procedures and document patient care activities.

Perform limited laboratory services, including patient identification, specimen collection and preparation, processing samples for testing, quality control testing, instrument maintenance, and reporting of results to clinicians.

Maintain confidentiality and respect, providing a friendly and caring environment for patients and teammates.

Support team objectives and assist other team members when necessary.

Qualifications

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Certification:

Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association required within 30 days of hire or transfer; Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) training required within 1 year of hire or transfer.

Experience:

At least 8 weeks of patient care education or direct patient care experience required; enrollment in a nursing school or physician assistant program acceptable. Ability to speak and write English required; bilingual preferred. Knowledge of medical terminology preferred.

Interpersonal skills required to communicate effectively with team members.

Demonstrated flexibility, prioritization, problem‑solving, and good judgment in difficult situations.

Proficiency in clinical applications preferred at time of hire; skills to be achieved within 30‑60 days from hire.

Performance Expectations

Demonstrate the ability to perform department-specific competencies as listed on the Assessment and Evaluation Tool.

Work Environment
Potential exposure to hazards and risks in the hospital environment, including infectious diseases, blood‑borne pathogens, hazardous substances, and injury. Physical duties include reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching (approximately 25% of a workday); standing, walking, and lifting 50–100 pounds frequently, with assistance occasionally. Visual and physical ability required to work at a computer terminal.

Reporting Relationship
The position reports to nursing unit leadership.
