Overview
The Licensed Professional Mental Health Counselor (LPMHC) will be a member of the Addiction Treatment Program (ATP) multidisciplinary team at Jesse Brown VA Medical Center, performing a wide variety of clinical counseling and administrative tasks.
Qualifications
United States Citizenship. Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy.
Education: hold a master’s or doctoral degree in one of the following areas, with the program accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP):
Clinical Mental Health Counseling
Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling
Both Clinical Mental Health Counseling and Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling
Related fields (Addiction Counseling, Community Counseling, Gerontology Counseling, Marital‑Couple‑Family Counseling, etc.)
License: possess a full, current, unrestricted license to independently practice as a Licensed Professional Mental Health Counselor, including diagnosis and treatment. If not yet licensed at the independent practice level, candidacy requires supervision by a licensed independent practitioner who is a VA staff member and has access to the electronic health record.
English Language Proficiency: proficiency in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005‑Part II‑Chapter 3‑Section A‑Paragraph 3.j.
Grade Determinations: the position is within the GS‑9 to GS‑11 range. GS‑9 candidates require no experience beyond the basic requirements or less than one year of post‑master’s experience; GS‑11 candidates require at least one year of post‑master’s or post‑doctoral mental health counseling experience and independent practice license. All candidates must demonstrate the KSAs listed below.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):
Engage in intake and assessment, problem identification, diagnosis, treatment planning, implementation, continuum of care, evaluation, and follow‑up.
Apply DSM‑5 in treatment goal formulation and clinical intervention.
Use individual, group, or family counseling interventions, including evidence‑based practices, psycho‑education, and psychosocial assessment.
Demonstrate multicultural counseling skills and sensitivity to diversity.
Serve effectively on an interdisciplinary team focused on intrapersonal, interpersonal, and relational functioning.
Use computer software for documentation, data management, and telehealth delivery.
Understand relevant statutes, case law, ethical codes, and regulations affecting professional counseling practice.
Communicate effectively with individuals from varied backgrounds.
For GS‑11, provide complex crisis intervention, stabilization, consultation to colleagues, advanced counseling, evidence‑based psychotherapy, and facilitation of psychotherapy and psycho‑education groups.

Duties
Serve as therapist/counselor with individuals and in group therapy sessions.
Observe and document patient behavior and reaction patterns for use by the multidisciplinary treatment team.
Develop and implement outpatient and after‑care strategies to motivate veterans’ participation.
Collaborate with service providers to re‑assess veterans’ needs and coordinate referrals.
Establish and maintain positive working relationships with employees, volunteers, consumers, and stakeholders within VA and the community.
Serve as consultant to hospital staff and trainees, assisting with formulation of mental/behavioral characteristics and treatment expectations.
Perform related professional duties as assigned, including program audits, site visits, tracer studies, care‑rounds, and reviews by inspectors or regulatory agencies.
Work schedule: Monday‑Friday 8:00 am–4:30 pm. Telework and virtual work are not authorized.
