Responsibilities

Provide initial intake screenings and assessments of Veterans using observation, assessment tools, and structured interviews to prepare written assessments based on social, medical, family, military, psychiatric, and other relevant referrals
Develop rehabilitation treatment plans using measurable treatment goals and objectives
Provide family psychoeducation or consultation to significant others or family members involved in Veterans' care
Provide individual and group counseling services using behavioral principles and evidence-based methods to treat substance use disorders (SUD) and co-occurring disorders
Facilitate discharge planning, post-rehabilitation placement, and aftercare services through VA and community resources
Provide initial orientation and education to Veterans regarding standards of behavior, expectations, and plans for evaluating progress
Work Schedule: Monday–Sunday, including at least one weekend day; tour of duty is flexible
Remote/Telework: May be authorized at supervisory discretion (not a fully virtual position)
Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (GS-09 level):
Knowledge of coexisting medical or other mental health disorders and the interrelationship of SUDs
Knowledge of basic recovery programs and resources
Skill in providing individual and group therapy, including using certain SUD evidence-based therapies (EBTs)
Skill in developing and maintaining effective working relationships with multidisciplinary staff, Veterans, families, and community resources for referrals
Ability to complete assessments of substance use disorders, treatment/recovery planning, and continuing care planning
Ability to identify psychological distress and secure appropriate interventions within VA policy and licensure scope
GS-11 level:
At least one year of creditable experience at GS-09 or equivalent, with the ability to:
Independently complete assessments of substance use disorders, treatment planning, and continued care planning
Apply counseling principles and methods for treating individuals with SUDs
Collaborate on medical or psychiatric disorders as interrelated to SUDs
Apply various community-based recovery programs and resources in treatment planning
Full performance level is GS-11; actual selection range is GS-09 to GS-11
Basic Requirements

Citizenship: United States
Education: Master’s degree or higher in drug and alcohol studies or related behavioral health field from an accredited college or university
Licensure: Full, current, and unrestricted license in a jurisdiction for independent practice in Alcohol and Drug Treatment (exception may apply; see original job text for details)
Licensure exceptions: May be waived for selectees otherwise qualified; non-licensed LMATs may work under clinical supervision until licensure is obtained, with certain conditions
Physical Requirements: Mostly sedentary work with standard physical activities (sitting, concentration, some walking, standing, bending, light carrying)
