Description
UC San Diego Health is a Magnet designated organization, a prestigious recognition awarded to only 10% of hospitals in the United States. UC San Diego Health has held its Magnet status since 2011. Anesthesia Critical Care encompasses four areas: Surgical ICU, Rapid Recovery Unit, Cardiac ICU, and the East Campus ICU. The Rapid Recovery Unit (RRU) is a perioperative unit which can provide ICU level of care for patients that require less than 24 hours of care before downgrade to IMU, med‑surg, or home.

This position follows standardized advanced practice procedure guidelines to ensure comprehensive care plans, consistent with ANA Standards of Practice and Professional Performance. Independent judgement is exercised within interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches to patient care. The major emphasis is ongoing direct patient care delivery for patients presenting chronic or episodic health problems. Responsibilities may include occasional community teaching programs, program planning, and patient education sessions.

Position updated on 4/22/2026 from 100% to 90% FTE to align with a 3x12‑hour shift schedule.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduate from an accredited nurse practitioner program.

Current California Registered Nurse (RN) license, California Nurse Practitioner (NP) license, and Furnishing License Certification, or obtain prior to provider credentialing and start date.

Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (NP) Certification (AGACNP or ACNP).

BLS/CPR and ACLS certifications at hire with commitment to acquire ART within six (6) months.

At least one (1) year of adult critical care experience as a licensed Nurse Practitioner.

Proficiency in documenting patient conditions and outcomes.

Proven knowledge of common diagnostic tests and procedures such as laboratory blood tests, x‑rays, EKGs, biopsies, and GI endoscopies.

Strong computer skills and familiarity with PCIS/Epic for patient data retrieval.

Knowledge of clinical laboratory values and skill in identifying deviations.

Experience providing patient education, counseling, and developing treatment plans.

Knowledge of study formats with ability to edit charts and resolve inconsistencies.

Skill in patient interviewing, obtaining concise medical history, and acquiring pertinent data.

Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.

Ability to work in a fast‑paced unit and triage acute patients while managing time.

Preferred Qualifications

Two (2+) years or more of adult critical care experience as a licensed Nurse Practitioner.

Special Conditions

Shifts may include Monday‑Sunday days and nights in the RRU and Surgical ICU.

Minimum 50% night shifts required.

Employment requires criminal background check and pre‑employment physical.

Must obtain and maintain UCSD Medical Staff privileges during employment; advanced practice credentialing experience must be within the last two years.

Current UCSD NPIII employees may be hired at the NPIII level pending review and approval by Health Human Resources and the UCSD Advanced Practice Council.

Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $176,624 - $247,157 (prorated if appointment percentage is less than 100%).

Hourly Equivalent: $84.59 - $118.37.

Compensation determined by experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure, certifications, and other organizational needs.
