Position Details
The Office for the Advancement of Research (OAR) oversees all research operations at John Jay College. It supports faculty, staff, graduate and undergraduate students in areas such as crime control, eyewitness testimony, forensic science, police training, prisoner reentry, psychology of violent behavior, public health and justice, science education, and many other fields. The OAR also provides training, research compliance activities, and professionalization of research operations and events throughout the college.
The Research Compliance Specialist reports to the Director of Research Compliance and Integrity and serves as the HRPP Coordinator, providing administrative support across compliance areas including Human Research Protection Program (HRPP), Research Agreements, Export Controls, Conflicts of Interest (COI) and Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR). The role requires excellent customer‑service skills, attention to detail, analytical, organizational, and communication abilities.
Responsibilities
Serve as a compliance resource for the research community and respond to questions and inquiries.
Maintain research compliance files, reports and websites under the supervision of the Director.
Act as the first point of contact for CUNY faculty, staff and students involved with Human Subjects Research. Review IRB submissions to evaluate whether they require CUNY HRPP or IRB review and issue determinations.
Perform administrative pre‑review of research submissions to ensure completeness and compliance with federal regulations and CUNY policies.
Review IRB applications submitted for category determination, assign to reviewers and process IRB determinations.
Update and maintain compliance training database and documentation.
Provide administrative support for office functions including processing of research agreements, export control determinations, conflicts of interest determinations, and related activities.
Participate and assist in audits and investigations of various kinds through fact‑gathering, analysis, oversight and reporting.
Complete special projects and assignments as specified by the Director of Research Compliance and Integrity.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required, four years of related experience; master’s degree preferred.
Knowledge of principles of ethical conduct of research with human subjects.
Knowledge of applicable federal regulations (OHRP, NIH, FDA, USDA, and other government agencies) related to human subjects research and compliance.
Advanced skills in MS Word and intermediate skills in database programs, including PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook.
At least four years of related professional experience; prior IRB experience preferred.
Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and demonstrated administrative skills.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Superior time‑management and multi‑tasking skills.
Excellent organizational skills, managing conflicting demands and priorities, without compromising quality.
Ability to work effectively and diplomatically with a broad range of researchers and others.
Ability to work collaboratively as well as independently.
Proven commitment to accuracy and thoroughness.
Ability to treat confidential information with utmost discretion.
Compensation and Benefits
Salary: $61,831 – $86,741 (commensurate with education and experience). CUNY benefits include health plans, competitive retirement/pension benefits and savings plans, tuition waivers for CUNY graduate study, generous paid time off, and access to academic, arts, and athletic programs.
