Project Manager – Flatirons Campus
The National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR) seeks an experienced Project Manager to lead ARIES capital projects within the MTES directorate at its Flatirons Campus in Boulder, Colorado. The role focuses on end‑to‑end planning and execution of capability build and infrastructure upgrades for advanced grid research platforms, coordinating across research, safety, operations, finance, and acquisition teams.
Key Responsibilities
Lead planning and execution of ARIES‑IESS projects following NLR project management standards and processes.
Establish milestones, track progress, and monitor adherence to baseline plans.
Support project procurement needs.
Identify schedule and budget risks early and develop mitigation plans.
Provide status reports to leadership and stakeholders as required.
Report metrics and flags on project performance for timely decision‑making.
Collaborate across disciplines—including researchers, research operations, site operations, and other key stakeholders—to ensure successful project execution.
Review medium‑voltage electrical design packages for compliance, reliability, and campus standards.
Understand campus infrastructure to support new projects.
Guide technical reviews of designs, planning documents, and execution strategies.
Basic Qualifications
Relevant PhD with 9+ years of experience or equivalent, or Master’s with 12+ years, or Bachelor’s with 14+ years of experience; must meet educational requirements before employment start date.
Expert understanding and application of project management principles, concepts, practices, and standards.
Expert knowledge of the technical field and related disciplines.
Exceptional ingenuity, creativity, and resourcefulness.
Typically viewed as an international expert within the field.
Outstanding interpersonal, conflict‑resolution, teaming, and communication skills.
Additional Required Qualifications
Proficiency in capital project governance and compliance.
Expertise in electrical systems, grid modernization, and integration.
Advanced financial acumen and cost management.
Leadership experience in regulated federal environments and infrastructure modernization planning.
Strong collaboration and stakeholder engagement skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience within DOE or other federal government environments.
Project Management Professional certification.
Familiarity with federal acquisition regulations and DOE project requirements.
Working knowledge of electrical codes, standards, and grid integration best practices.
Electrical engineering degree preferred.
Annual Salary Range
Project Manager V – $120,400 – $216,700 (based on full‑time 40 hours per week). Salary determined by education, training, experience, required travel, market conditions, seniority, merit systems, and internal alignment. Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act applies.
