2 West – Medical Surgical/Telemetry Unit
This 40‑bed unit offers both medical‑surgical and telemetry capabilities, providing comprehensive care for a diverse patient population. We specialize in managing conditions across various specialties including cardiac, pulmonary, infectious disease, neurology, GI, surgical, orthopedic, and more. Additionally, 2 West accommodates observation patients. You will thrive within our collaborative team structure, working alongside RNs, LPNs, PCTs, cardiac monitor technicians, and unit secretaries.
General Overview
This job requires 12‑hour shifts and focuses on direct patient care and non‑direct unit coordination. The incumbent performs basic nursing procedures for patients in stable condition, assists the RN with acutely ill patients, and adheres to hospital policies and emergency protocols. Responsibilities also include unit upkeep, participation in patient admissions, discharges, and transfers, and maintaining accurate documentation in the electronic medical record.
Essential Responsibilities
Provides, obtains, performs, and documents direct patient care and activities such as activities of daily living; encourages and observes patients on incentive spirometer and/or cough and deep breath; performs skin survey, vital signs, specimen collection, phlebotomy, intake and output, meal consumption, height and weight, 12‑lead EKG testing, blood glucose testing/monitoring, point‑of‑care testing, bladder scanning, transporting patients and their medical records, documentation of O₂, early mobility/ambulation protocols, clean catheterization technique, simple dressing change, dry dressing change, removal of indwelling urinary catheter, and straight catheterizations. Also assists with IV access insertions and removals with documentation and assists with exams, treatments, and procedures. Assists in cardiac monitoring and transportation of low‑level monitoring patients. (50%)
Participates in quality and patient satisfaction initiatives which may include bedside shift report, purposeful hourly rounding promoting safety such as falls prevention, hand washing, isolation protocols, and maintaining a clean and orderly environment; precepts newly hired PCTs. (20%)
Accurately documents vital signs, weights, I&O, restraints, specimen collection, EKG completion, and all other treatments. Reports changes in patients’ physical, mental, and emotional conditions or any concerns to nursing staff. (15%)
Participates in unit activities such as supply stocking and equipment/appliance cleaning, checks, and retrieval. (15%)
Performs other duties as assigned or required.
Qualifications
Minimum
High School Diploma or GED
Limited or no experience; must be able to attend 2 weeks of training
Ability to perform basic mathematics
Ability to read, write and follow oral and written instructions
Basic computer skills
CPR – American Heart Association
Act 34 Criminal Background Clearance Certificate
Act 33 Child Abuse Clearance Certificate
Act 73 FBI Fingerprinting Criminal Background Clearance Certificate
