Job Summary
The selectee serves as a Biological Science Laboratory Technician at a laboratory or work unit within Plant Protection and Quarantine, Science and Technology (PPQ S&T) and is responsible for carrying out complex tasks, analyses, evaluations, studies, and diagnostics using a variety of sophisticated technologies in support of scientific studies.

Qualifications

One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-06 grade level) that demonstrates experience with Plant Protection principles and laboratory techniques.

Ability to follow written and oral instructions and execute laboratory, field, or computer-based research.

Experience in data collection, data quality control, electronically storing data, basic summary analysis, and reporting.

Ability to communicate effectively and work successfully with team members to achieve a common goal.

Successful completion of 18 semester hours of graduate-level education or internship in biology, entomology, botany, or agriculture—or in a field directly related to the position—may substitute for the specialized experience at the GS-7 level.

Transcripts are required if you are qualifying for the position based on education, the combination of experience and education, or the combination of education & experience at the GS-7 level.

A combination of successfully completed education and specialized experience may meet total qualification requirements; the combined percentages must equal at least 100 percent to qualify for that grade level.

Volunteer work through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations may be counted as qualifying experience.

Major Duties

Prepare study plans for scientific experiments, using the scientist's hypothesis, and attend to all technical and administrative concerns.

Develop and manage data: refine, verify, justify, and organize the data; analyze and evaluate findings; and write up results for review.

Conduct tests and analyses of studies and evaluate data on plant pests detected domestically or intercepted at ports of entry worldwide.

Collect and manage data, evaluate and analyze data on risk, diagnosis, mitigation, rearing, control, treatment, and quarantine status.

Manage plant and/or pest samples and resulting data: receipt, storage, processing, photographing, and archiving, following procedures to ensure sample integrity and custody.
