
Phlebotomist - Outpatient - Full-Time - AAMC

Position Objective
Performs laboratory specimen collection from patients for diagnostic purposes.
Essential Job Duties

Determine and execute the best method for obtaining biological specimens from patients of all ages (venipuncture, capillary, heel‑stick) to ensure quality specimens for testing. Follow established productivity guidelines with minimal errors.
Order appropriate tests in the Laboratory Information System (LIS) as requested by authorized providers. Resolve unusual or unclear test orders by contacting the ordering provider; respond to requests for lab results and send scheduled reports.
Interact with patients in a professional and compassionate manner, explaining procedures, addressing concerns, and ensuring comfort during blood collection.
Prepare aliquots of samples and shipping batches for transport within the hospital campus or to contracted laboratories following vendor protocols. Register, draw, and ship client specimens.
Maintain a safe and clean working environment by following procedures, rules, and regulations. Promote inter‑ and intradepartmental workflow through cooperation and effective handoffs.
Maintain laboratory supply inventory and conserve resources by using equipment and supplies appropriately.
Perform preventative maintenance and troubleshoot equipment problems to the full extent of ability.
Practice proper patient identification verification; manage work queues to ensure accurate and complete registration including demographics, insurance, service date, ordering caregiver, and special flags.
Actively participate in the laboratory quality plan/program (e.g., investigative reports, notification of delays).
Participate in the training of new staff and students by serving as a mentor and technical resource.
Educational/Experience Requirements
Required Minimum Education
High School Diploma or equivalent
Specialized training in phlebotomy
Required Minimum Experience
One year of experience in an outpatient or acute care facility in an equivalent role, preferred
Required License/Certifications
Phlebotomy certification with the National Phlebotomy Association or American Society of Clinical Pathology (or eligible), preferred
Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR certification, preferred
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
Ability to work cooperatively with all types of personalities both inside and outside the organization
Requires travel to various sites
