Summary
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Candidates must meet the VHA eligibility requirements and submit an EDRP application within four months of appointment. The program award (up to $200,000) and the eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services office after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.
Qualifications
United States Citizenship – non‑citizens may only be appointed when no qualified citizens are available for recruitment in accordance with VA policy.
Education – a doctoral degree in psychology from an APA‑accredited program, or from a CPA‑accredited program, at the time of completion. The specialty area must match the assignment. For 1951–1978 regional certificates with a psychological dissertation, a one‑year supervised internship is required.
Re‑specialization – a doctoral degree in any psychology field plus completion of an approved re‑specialization program (documented internship) in an APA or CPA program, with the retrained specialty matching the assignment.
Internship – a professional psychology internship accredited by APA or CPA, or an acceptable new VHA program sanctioned by the VHA Central Office. Prior to PL 96‑151, full‑time one‑year pre‑doctoral internships are acceptable.
Licensure – a full, current, unrestricted license to practice psychology at the doctoral level in a U.S. state, territory, or Commonwealth. Temporary “graduate psychologist” appointments (GS‑11 or GS‑12) under 38 U.S.C. 7405 are permitted for up to two years under supervision of a licensed psychologist; failure to obtain licensure results in termination.
Grade requirements – GS‑11 (entry level) requires no experience beyond the basic requirements; GS‑12 requires at least one year of professional practice; GS‑13 requires at least two years of professional practice, including one year of GS‑12 equivalent practice.
Demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities – comprehensive knowledge of a wide range of professional psychological treatments and assessments; ability to design and implement effective treatment strategies; incorporate new clinical procedures; conduct research activities; and perform basic research tasks within an established team.
Preferred experience – psychotherapy in an outpatient mental health setting; evidence‑based psychotherapy background.
Physical requirements – primarily sedentary; may require standing, walking, manual dexterity, and light lifting of items such as books and laptops.
Duties
Serve as a fully qualified psychologist within the Mental Health Service, primarily assigned as a therapist in a Behavioral Health Interdisciplinary Program (BHIP).
Diagnose mental disorders, conduct psychological or neuropsychological assessments, and treat disorders through individual, family, and group psychotherapy using evidence‑based treatments.
Perform assessments for diverse patient conditions, including mental illness, substance abuse, and general emotional and cognitive functioning.
Develop and implement therapeutic interventions emphasizing evidence‑based models in outpatient settings.
Provide psychoeducation to patients and families to support healthcare adherence and relapse prevention.
Collaborate with the BHIP team to support optimal clinical care and coordinate care with community providers following HIPAA practices.
Participate in improvement of clinical supervision skills, program development, and outcome data analysis for program evaluation.
Assume responsibility for timely completion of all clinical charting, documentation, and maintain ongoing scholarly and self‑education activities.
Engage in research with relevant populations and participate in psychology peer review and educational seminars.
Serve on committees or workgroups as assigned.
