Nursing Assistant I + Clerical (CST) needed for the Acute Neurosurgery & ENT Care Unit at UNC Medical Center, Chapel Hill, NC. The unit is a 27‑bed post‑operative surgical unit caring for neurosurgical and ENT patients.
Working on this unit will provide opportunities to expand foundational clinical and critical thinking skills, including airway management, tracheal suctioning, drains, feeding tubes, and in‑depth neurological and stroke assessment.
Summary: Responsible for assisting the professional caregiver in the delivery of patient care, transporting patients and/or equipment, setting up and maintaining patient rooms, and performing a wide range of clerical, transcription, and maintenance tasks for the patient care unit desk area.
Responsibilities
Assists physicians and other health care providers with routine examinations and procedures, and procurement of equipment and supplies.
Critically reviews patient care documentation, noting significant changes in the patient’s condition, and reports immediately to a registered nurse or physician.
Provides clerical tasks including organizing workload, greeting and directing visitors, researching information, reviewing orders, revising orders, answering the telephone/patient call lights, transcribing physician orders, maintaining medical records, conducting quality assurance audits, safety checks, and inventorying supplies.
Provides clinical support assistance such as cleaning the work area, maintaining office equipment, troubleshooting software/hardware problems, changing linens, checking supply inventory, re‑stocking supplies, transporting patients, supplies, specimens, and assisting in orientation of new employees and students.
Provides direct personal care to patients as outlined in the plan of care: bathing, dressing, feeding, ambulation, measuring vital signs, patient height & weight, specimen collection, skin preps/scrubs, catheter care, capillary blood glucose checks, simple wound care, range of motion exercises, and/or postural drainage.
Reinforces routine teaching given to patients by the registered nurse or physician and documents patient understanding; distributes patient education materials as requested.

Education Requirements:
High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED)
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
Listed as a Nursing Assistant I by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services; Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Professional Experience Requirements:
Prior experience not required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Must be fluent in verbal and written English; ability to develop computer skills if not competent.
Job Details
Standard Hours Per Week: 36.00 (36 hours per week; 12‑hour rotating shifts 7 am‑7 pm and 7 pm‑7:30 am with weekend and holiday rotation)
Pay range: $18.12 – $25.51 per hour (Hiring Range)
Work Assignment Type: Onsite
Location: Chapel Hill, North Carolina
