Overview
The Stephens lab is a behavioral neuroendocrinology lab that examines the interaction of hormones, biological sex, the brain, and behavior. Our research focuses on puberty onset, adult fertility, reproductive hormone secretion, brain regulation, sex differences, genetic factors, developmental disruptions, and their consequences.
Key Responsibilities
Perform research experiments involving molecular and physiological analyses of neuroendocrinology and behavior in rodent models.
Assist lab members with experiments and manage the rodent colony, ensuring compliance with ACUP and IACUC policies.
Conduct animal duties: health checks, breeding, handling, blood sampling, injections, surgical procedures, euthanasia, tissue collection, and executing rodent studies.
Perform molecular biology techniques: RNA/DNA extractions, genotyping, RT‑PCR, qPCR, cloning, gel running, and transcription reactions.
Prepare lab solutions and reagents.
Perform histology techniques: brain and tissue collection, cryostat sectioning, and preparation of samples for microscopy.
Assist in histological assays such as in situ hybridization and immunocytochemistry, and conduct microscopy analyses.
Analyze data, help design future experiments, train student researchers, and perform general lab maintenance.
Manage lab inventory, order supplies, act as liaison between departments, update protocols, and handle biohazard waste and radioactivity compliance.
Willingness to perform tasks involving rodent handling, radioactive isotopes, recombinant DNA, biohazardous materials, toxic chemicals, and flexible scheduling.
Qualifications
Experience with rodent colony management and animal procedures.
Proficiency in molecular biology and histology techniques.
Familiarity with safety, biohazard, and radioactivity regulations.
Ability to work independently and flexibly.
