Surg Tech I - On Call - San Marcos - Outpatient Surgery

Job Summary
Under close supervision, assists during surgery as a member of the surgical team by preparing and organizing the operating room prior to surgery, selecting and passing instruments during surgical procedures, maintaining the operating room in aseptic condition following established policies and procedures, and assisting with patient care during and after surgery. Conforms to prescribed policies and procedures regarding aseptic techniques. Maintains a cooperative, courteous relationship with the patients, the public, and other personnel.

Essential Responsibilities

Assists physician during surgery as a member of the surgical team. Passes instruments and supplies as directed. Scrubs and conforms to sterile technique for each procedure.

Assists in draping the patient (previously stated positioning and draping patient).

Provides proper retraction of tissue. At the direction of the surgeon, can hold a retractor (but cannot place a retractor).

Assists in controlling hemostasis by applying a Bovie to a clamp at the direction of the surgeon.

Assists with sponging, suctioning, and performing sponge, needle/sharp, and instrument counts.

Prepares suture for closure of surgical incision.

Applies proper surgical dressing as directed by physician (wound healing and dressings).

Recognizes, responds to, and assists in acute emergency situations following established procedures and policies.

Holds and positions a video camera under direction of the surgeon. Checks surgeon’s preference cards (removed gown) and prepares sterile setup for surgeon.

Counts with circulating nurse before patient preparation. Is accountable for items required for documentation on that procedure.

Anticipates surgeon’s wants and keeps adequate sutures and supplies ready. Keeps Mayo stand and back table neat and orderly, ensuring that there are no loose needles on the field.

Confirms all specimens with the surgeon. Hands off specimens to the circulator prior to the end of the case or earlier if directed by the surgeon.

Takes all instruments to the workroom for washing or places them in a cart to return to the Sterile Processing Department.

Removes suction bottles, etc., and disposes of any contaminated instruments.

Adheres to methods of sterilization, disinfecting, antisepsis, and aseptic techniques.

Packages, stores, and dispenses surgery supplies.

Principles for maintaining environmental safety: including handling of surgical specimens and body fluids. Requires counts. Addresses electrical and radiation hazards and fire safety.

Handles drains, tubes, and collection mechanisms, catheters.

Manages modes of transportation to and from the operating room, including ICU transport.

Performs patient care and emergency procedures, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Assists surgeons with surgical procedures in other patient areas according to patient needs, e.g., touch-to-ostomy and PDA repair in NICU.

Other duties as assigned or required.

Basic Qualifications

One (1) year of operating room or military equivalent experience in a scrub role within the last two years or recent completion of an operating room training program.

Current KP Coalition employees are exempt from this experience requirement per the National Agreement.

Education

License, Certification, Registration

Surgical Technologist Certificate within 6 months of hire from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting or National Center for Competency Testing Certificate – Technologist in Surgery within 6 months of hire from the National Center for Competency Testing.

Basic Life Support certification.

Additional Requirements

Ability to scrub all types of surgical cases except open heart.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior experience as a First Assistant is preferred.
