Job Description
The Corrections Qualified Mental Health Professional (QMHP) is a member of a multi‑disciplinary treatment team providing professional mental health services to prisoners, including the hospitalized, medically ill and other special populations. The QMHP conducts mental health evaluations, makes referrals to appropriate levels of care, monitors progress, and ensures continuity of care. They provide psychosocial assessments, interventions, consultations, and referrals as directed by the supervisor, and assist with placement and community services for released prisoners.
Responsibilities
Perform mental health evaluations and monitor prisoner progress.
Refer prisoners to appropriate mental health levels of care and coordinate treatment.
Provide psychosocial assessments, interventions, consultations, and referrals.
Assist with placement planning and obtaining community services upon discharge.
Maintain accurate records, prepare reports and correspondence.
Collaborate with other professional disciplines and make independent clinical judgments.
Education & Experience
Master’s degree in psychology, social work, counseling or related field.
Michigan license to practice the applicable Qualified Mental Health Profession (psychologist, social worker, counselor, registered nurse, or other QMHP).
Experience: No specific amount required for QMHP 9; one year for QMHP 10; two years with one year of QMHP 10 equivalency for QMHP P11.
Pre‑appointment, random‑selection, and post‑accident drug and alcohol testing.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of mental health counseling, individual and group therapy and psychoeducational treatments.
Knowledge of mental health assessments and interpretation within scope of license.
Knowledge of crisis evaluation, intervention and treatment plan development.
Knowledge of comorbid substance abuse and mental illness diagnosis and treatment.
Knowledge of techniques for observing and assessing behavior and of human, emotional, social, psychological and environmental problems.
Ability to work with other professional disciplines, make independent clinical judgments, communicate effectively, and maintain professional records.
Additional Requirements
Michigan license to practice the applicable Qualified Mental Health Profession.
