Lead Residential Care Specialist - Position Overview

The Lead Residential Care Specialist (Lead RCS) provides a therapeutic environment for youth in the CARES Center program through direct supervision of Residential Care Specialists and youth on assigned shifts daily.

Balancing supervisory duties with direct care duties, the Lead RCS works closely with the CARES team to ensure the mission is carried out.

Collaborates with the Residential Life Coordinator to manage scheduling, payroll, and disciplinary needs.

Carries out training and onboarding of RCSs in coordination with the Residential Training Coordinator.

Ensures continuity of care across units for the duration of assigned shift.

Provides adult role modeling and contributes positively to a culture of ideal team players.

Engages youth in therapeutic activities, relational supervision, and clinical meetings.

Supports RCSs in teaching coping, communication, and pro‑social skills according to individualized behavior plans.

Job Responsibilities
Supervisory Responsibilities

Assign RCSs to units for the shift.

Coach RCSs involved in significant milieu disruptions or emergency safety interventions, following the Managing Aggressive Behavior framework.

Provide on‑the‑job training for new hires during their first week on the unit.

Offer feedback to RCSs as needed.

Lead staff debriefs after significant events in partnership with the Residential Training Coordinator.

Conduct all pre‑shift "pass down" meetings to ensure safe and therapeutic shift transitions.

Share relevant information with other Lead RCSs regarding upcoming shifts.

Attend Child and Family Team meetings and clinical communities; provide notes if unable to attend.

Notify the Residential Life Coordinator of any administrative issues on shift.

Notify the Residential Training Coordinator of any training issues with RCSs.

Approve temporary timesheets for assigned RCSs.

Assist the Residential Training Coordinator in ensuring RCSs comply with HR and training standards.

Document weekly supervision, annual reviews, and disciplinary actions for assigned RCSs.

Direct Care Responsibilities

Teach youth daily living skills, social skills, conflict resolution, and independent living skills.

Create opportunities for experiential practice through activities and games, including debriefing.

Implement therapeutic systems, consequences, and restorative tasks as appropriate.

Assist with admissions (checking belongings, initial orientation, escorting to assigned location) on a rotating basis.

Observe and engage with youth to prevent and de‑escalate out‑of‑control behavior.

Alert supervisors, clinical, and administrative staff to anticipated youth problems.

Provide safe transportation for youth in an agency vehicle when needed.

Respond to youths’ acting behavior using safe physical intervention per MAB curriculum when necessary.

Debrief youth after each emergency safety intervention (ESI).

Report facility and safety concerns to supervisor.

Participate in scheduled training to meet licensing and accrediting agency requirements.

Complete required documentation: incidents, precautions, and other forms.

On overnight shifts, complete paperwork (shift reports, behavior sheets, roster reports) on a rotating basis.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Prior experience working with children and adolescents.

Experience at CARES preferred.

Some college preferred.

Previous supervisory or leadership experience preferred.

Excellent communication skills.

At least twenty‑one (21) years old, hold a valid driver’s license, and be covered by agency insurance.

Proficient in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding English; communicate therapeutically and professionally.
