Responsibilities

This is a professional position that conducts epidemiologic investigations and environmental health assessments in response to cases and outbreaks believed to have environmental causes and responds to natural and technologic disasters. Work is highly technical and performed independently with limited supervision.

The incumbent works to protect, promote, and improve the health of all people in Florida through integrated state, county, and community efforts. Disease Control & Prevention – Senior Epidemiologist

(independent, highly responsible role) responsible for epidemiological monitoring, investigation, reporting, and syndromic surveillance across Clay County.

Maintain daily in-office or field work; consult with local and state epidemiology officials; monitor and report on community health; provide technical expertise for reporting of communicable diseases; lead outbreak investigations; monitor surveillance systems (EPICOM, MERLIN, ESSENCE and other databases); produce required reports; meet reporting deadlines; participate in regional and state epidemiology calls; map data with GIS; assist in health assessments; analyze data for outbreaks and surveillance reports; establish and maintain relationships with local infectious disease practitioners; participate in on-call drills; conduct monitoring of DOH-Clay disease prevention practices; collaborate to improve disease prevention, identification, and treatment practices; maintain cross-training; stay current with epidemiology knowledge; act as backup to rabies program lead as needed.

Specific Programs

Disease Control, Perinatal Hepatitis B Lead

— Leads perinatal hepatitis B program, reviews faxes, requests medical records, checks vaccination status, advises physicians and local OB/GYN offices, follows infected mothers through pregnancy and coordinates infant care after delivery.

Attends quarterly perinatal coordinator calls; consults with case reviewers on hepatitis classification and follow-up; remains subject matter expert on treatment, lab results, and prevention.

Health Promotion & Outreach

Collaborates with outreach coordinator to educate partners, facilities, and hospitals; plans outreach calendars; staffs outreach events; distributes educational materials; supports implementation and tracking of strategic goals.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of epidemiology principles and medical terminology

Advanced Microsoft Office skills

Ability to learn and use computer programs

Strong time and project management abilities

Effective oral and written communication

Knowledge of Chapter 64E, F.A.C.

Qualifications
Minimum

– Daily in-office or field work required; must be able to physically come into the office daily. Bachelor’s degree in public health or higher, or bachelor’s degree with epidemiology coursework, or master’s in public health with epidemiology coursework.

Preferred

– Experience conducting public health surveillance; DOH experience with Merlin, ESSENCE, STARS; experience interviewing/counseling or conducting disease investigations.
