Job Description
The Specimen Processor I performs specimen accessioning, sample sorting, and data entry in a fast‑paced, high‑throughput laboratory environment. This role introduces and prepares biological specimens for analysis and testing while following established SOPs to ensure accurate, timely, and high‑quality results.
Responsibilities
Introduce and prepare biological specimens for laboratory processing in accordance with standard operating procedures.
Open specimen containers and transfer samples into appropriate secondary containers to prepare for analysis and testing.
Verify that patient demographic information matches the test requisition form and resolve discrepancies as needed.
Accurately enter patient and specimen information into the computer system for tracking and documentation.
Meet established production metrics and quality standards to support timely and accurate test results.
Unpack incoming specimens and route them to the appropriate staging or processing areas.
Pack and ship specimens to designated testing facilities when required, following proper handling and shipping protocols.
Properly prepare, label, and store excess specimen samples for potential future testing or reference.
Identify, resolve, and document issues related to problem specimens according to laboratory procedures.
Handle and dispose of medical and chemical waste safely and in compliance with applicable policies.
Follow all environmental health and safety policies and procedures while performing daily tasks.
Operate automated laboratory instrumentation under supervision when necessary.
Essential Skills
High school diploma or equivalent.
0–2 years of work experience, preferably in a medical, laboratory, or production environment.
Experience or familiarity with laboratory specimen processing and accessioning.
Proficient computer and typing skills for accurate and efficient data entry.
Ability to comfortably handle human biological specimens, including blood, urine, and tissue samples.
Ability to lift up to 30 pounds and work while sitting or standing for extended periods.
Strong hand‑eye coordination to accurately identify and handle specimens by touch and sight.
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
High level of attention to detail with strong problem‑solving abilities.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work in protective equipment as required by laboratory safety protocols.
Ability to complete a standardized color vision test to determine if accommodation is needed for color‑dependent tasks.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Previous experience in a medical laboratory or production setting is preferred.
Comfort working in a fast‑paced, high‑throughput environment with time‑sensitive tasks.
Willingness to learn and operate automated laboratory instrumentation under supervision.
Reliability and flexibility to adjust to changing workload and shift coverage needs.
Work Environment
This position operates in a clinical laboratory environment that handles human biological specimens such as blood, urine, and tissue. The role involves working with protective equipment and following strict safety and waste disposal protocols. The regular schedule is Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., with rotating Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The position requires flexibility to cover or switch shifts with other onsite processors as needed, including shifts from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and 12:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., for coverage such as vacations.

Pay And Benefits
