Qualifications

Specialized Experience:

One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS‑04, including understanding policies, performing phlebotomy, setting up equipment, instructing patients, preparing referral specimens, performing clerical duties, and maintaining records.

Education:

Successful completion of a full 4‑year bachelor's degree or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position. Transcripts required.

Combination:

Equivalent combination of specialized experience and education as described above. Transcripts required and experience detailed in resume.

Responsibilities

Collects and processes specimens obtained for analyses throughout P&LMS and associated reference laboratories, ensuring safety and quality.

Performs venipuncture specimen collections from inpatients, outpatients, and urgent care rooms.

Completes collections with minimal failures and ensures timely submission to the clinical laboratory.

Uses syringe or butterfly needle when necessary for difficult specimens.

Conducts gross visual observation during collection, identifying subtle changes and notifying emergency personnel as needed.

Secures patient cooperation, explains phlebotomy procedures, and positions patients for optimal results.

Explains post‑phlebotomy procedures, such as pressure application and bandaging for patients on blood thinners, and addresses patient concerns.

Checks patients into the phlebotomy area, confirms two forms of ID, logs patients, and accessioning into the computer for proper labels.

Ensures patient identification with two different types before obtaining any specimen.

Generates labels that match test requisition slips or electronic requests and patient identification, and labels all specimens in front of the patient.

Receives, sorts, and logs specimens from inpatients, outpatients, and Community Based Outpatient Clinics, and delivers specimens to laboratory sections.

Operates centrifuges, reports malfunctions to the supervisor, and evaluates temperature requirements of specimen refrigerators.

Prepares specimens for send‑out to reference laboratories by centrifuging, storing at appropriate temperatures, and creating manifests.

Collects employee urine drug screens as scheduled or requested by Human Resources.
