
Registered Nurse - Oncology - Per Diem

Job Description
The registered professional nurse is responsible for effectively carrying out the nursing process: assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, evaluation, documentation, and time management. They are responsible for quality communication, teamwork, and leadership/professionalism. They also direct, coordinate, and implement patient teaching, quality/safety initiatives, and activities of other health team personnel while maintaining standards of professional nursing.
Responsibilities of a Registered Nurse Per Diem (RN PD)
A Registered Nurse Per Diem (RN PD) is responsible for the care of the population they are assigned. They must complete yearly mandatory competencies, any unit‑specific competencies identified by the Director/Designee as related to the patient population of their unit, and complete the Professional Practice Ladder requirements which include assuming responsibility as Charge Nurse, participating in PI activities and department initiatives, communicating and sharing information with the Director/Designee and coworkers from unit or hospital committees, attending Valley Health paid education, seminars, conferences, workshops, or nursing articles. The portfolio must be current and submitted to the Director/Designee annually by March 1st. They routinely solicit and validate patient/family satisfaction, participate in peer review for the unit, and develop bulletin board or poster that provides educational information to staff/patients/family members.
Education
Associates Nursing (RN Diploma, ASN or ADN) is required. Bachelor’s Nursing (BSN) is preferred.
Experience
Two years of RN experience is required.
Certification & Licensures
RN License is required. Candidates must be licensed or eligible to practice pending licensure as a Registered Nurse in Virginia, with either a multi‑state license under the Nurse Licensure Compact or a single‑state license valid in Virginia only. BLS certification (Basic Life Support) from the American Heart Association is required before completion of orientation. Relevant specialty certification is preferred.
Qualifications
Competent in providing care based on the cognitive, physical, emotional, and chronological stages of human growth and development. Competent to provide care to patients utilizing the nursing process. Must have a reliable means of phone communication with the hospital. If an RN begins employment as an RN I or is promoted to RN I from a VH position, must secure an Eligibility to Test Letter (or interim phone primary source verification) from the Virginia Board of Nursing if a Virginia resident or non‑compact state resident. If residing in a Compact state other than Virginia, cannot commence employment as an RNA; must first secure home state’s Compact license with multi‑state privileges and may then commence RN employment as an RN I.
