Summary
The incumbent serves as an Advanced Medical Support Assistant at VA CBOC Delaware - Ohio. The AMSA performs a variety of technical support duties that facilitate the work of physicians, physician assistants, nurses, nursing assistants, and other members of the medical facility who provide direct patient care.

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005 - Part II - Chapter 3 - Section A - paragraph 3.j.

Experience and Education: Six months experience in clerical, office, customer service, or other administrative work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position, or one year above high school, or an equivalent combination of experience and education.

Medical Support Assistant (Advanced) - GS-6 Experience: One year of experience equivalent to the GS-5 grade level. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities include collaborating and communicating with a wide range of medical clinicians, independently setting priorities, communicating tactfully and effectively, preparing reports and presenting data, advanced knowledge of the technical health care process, policies, procedures, and medical terminology.

Preferred Experience: Medical office experience with computer systems and customer service.

Physical Requirements: Mostly sedentary work with occasional walking, standing, bending, light carrying, and moderate exertion.

Duties

Coordinate with the patient care team to review clinic appointment availability and adjust schedules as necessary.

Utilize advanced patient systems in support of multiple clinics involved in an interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery model.

Screen and receive phone calls in a courteous and timely manner, determining the nature of the request and providing the information desired using privacy rules and established clinic processes.

Schedule all appointments with the patient's input, either in person or by phone.

Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA requirements.

Review active and pending consults daily.

Set priorities and deadlines, adjusting the workflow to meet team and patient needs.

Enter appropriate information into the electronic record.

Monitor pre-appointment information and/or requirements to ensure readiness for patient visits or procedures.

Manage patient systems to verify and validate accuracy and resolve issues.

Benefits

Work Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm.

Pay: Competitive salary with regular increases and higher step rates for unique qualifications.

Paid Time Off: 37–50 days of annual paid time, including 13–26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, and 11 paid federal holidays. Selected applicants may receive credit toward annual leave accrual based on prior work experience or military service.

Parental Leave: Up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave after 12 months of employment for birth, adoption, or foster care placement.

Childcare Subsidy: Eligible employees after 60 days of employment with total family income below $144,000 may receive up to 25% of childcare costs, up to a monthly maximum of $416.66.

Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401(k) with up to 5% VA contributions.

Insurance: VA health, vision, dental, term life, long‑term care, and other federal insurance programs available and can be carried into retirement.

Telework: Ad‑hoc, as determined by agency policy. The position is not virtual.

Permanent Change of Station (PCS): Not authorized.
