The County of Riverside - RUHS - Correctional Health System seeks to fill a Medical Records Technician II for the Southwest Detention Center located in Murrieta, CA.

Job Overview

Under general supervision, you will abstract and provide information from patient medical or mental health and vital records in response to authorized requests from agencies, hospitals, mortuaries, and individuals; assemble medical or mental health and vital records and evaluate them for completeness; work with professional medical personnel to ensure completeness and timeliness of entries in patient medical and vital records; perform other related duties as required.

Core Responsibilities

Abstract essential information from patient charts such as history, findings, laboratory results, X-ray results, surgeries, diagnoses, and dates and times of admission and treatments; prepare statistical reports.

Maintain supply inventory; register live births, deaths and fetal deaths; facilitate delivery of newborn screening tests.

Communicate with parents, lawyers and other interested parties regarding the accuracy, completeness and availability of documents.

Pull and research medical or mental health charts; complete various forms, certificates and documents related to entries in medical records.

Accept subpoenas for medical or mental health records or information and prepare responses; determine legality of requests and verify identity of inquirer as needed.

Verify invoices for state reimbursement for contracted medical services.

Perform other related duties as required.

Work Schedule

Tentative 9/80 schedule, 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with every other Friday off. (To be discussed during interview.)

Qualifications

Option I

Education: Completion of a course in medical terminology from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Two years of clerical experience working in a medical or mental health records department/section of a hospital, healthcare setting, provider relations, or managed care performing duties which include patient statistics and patient records assembly and evaluation.

Option II

Education: Completion of training from a recognized occupational training program (which included medical terminology) as a medical assistant or a closely related field.

Experience: Two years of clerical experience working in a medical or mental health records department/section of a hospital, healthcare setting, provider relations, or managed care performing duties which include patient statistics and patient records assembly and evaluation.

Option III

Education: Completion of a course in medical terminology from an accredited college or university.

Experience: One year equivalent to a Medical Records Technician I with Riverside County.

Option IV

Education: Completion of training from a recognized occupational training program (which included medical terminology) as a medical assistant or a closely related field.

Experience: One year equivalent to a Medical Records Technician I with Riverside County.

All Options

Knowledge of technical terminology used in the medical profession; standard medical nomenclature; laws, rules and regulations pertaining to medical records; standard clerical office procedures and machine usage.

Ability to understand and follow complex written and oral instructions; review patient medical records and abstract requested medical information; learn and use classification and indexing of medical case histories; perform general clerical work; use excellent oral and written communication skills; perform accurate arithmetical computations; work effectively with the public and professional medical personnel; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
