The Position
Responsible for providing legal support to the NA Privacy Program and other US affiliates on privacy, data protection, and data security matters. The role focuses on privacy legal support to U.S. stakeholders and liaises with global partners on US privacy activities.
Relationships
Reports to Deputy General Counsel – Clinical, Commercial and Corporate Law. Supports the NA Privacy Team and collaborates across the company, including with attorneys, paraprofessionals, stakeholders in other NNI departments, affiliate companies, and Novo Nordisk global headquarters. May also interact with external partners, vendors, law firms, and industry associations.
Essential Functions
Act as the company’s privacy legal expert with knowledge of applicable federal, state, and international privacy laws and regulations, including the FTC Act, CAN‑SPAM, HIPAA/HITECH, comprehensive state privacy laws, biometric laws, laws on artificial intelligence, medical information privacy laws, and global privacy laws.
Serve as legal partner to the NA Privacy Office and Chief Privacy Officer on privacy and cybersecurity obligations for U.S. operations, supporting risk identification and enhancement of the U.S. Privacy Program.
Manage privacy incident response related to data security incidents/data breaches, including conducting privileged and confidential breach investigations.
Collaborate on privacy risk assessments, identify areas of potential legal risk, and drive solutions.
Conduct privileged and confidential compliance investigations involving privacy and data protection policy violations.
Draft, update, and negotiate data privacy contractual provisions in agreements with third‑party vendors, digital health partners, healthcare professionals, and SaaS providers.
Represent the company on privacy‑related committees and workstreams.
Advise on emerging technologies, including AI, health technology, and medical devices.
Liaise with privacy professionals at peer companies and industry organizations.
Stay informed of new laws and industry trends to proactively identify risks and mitigation actions, and assist with policy and training development.
Retain, manage, and assist outside counsel as needed.
Perform other duties as assigned by senior management.
Provide legal support with minimal oversight from the managing attorney.
Physical Requirements
10–20% overnight travel required.
Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree, JD degree, and state bar admission.
6+ years of experience in a law firm or in‑house legal department.
Extensive experience providing privacy counsel to the life sciences/pharmaceutical industry; in‑house privacy/cybersecurity experience preferred.
Certified Information Privacy Professional certification highly desired.
In‑depth knowledge of applicable state, federal, and international privacy laws.
Demonstrated ability to make sound risk assessments, resolve legal and regulatory issues quickly, and make real‑time decisions.
Proven track record as a strong team player with ability to work collaboratively and cross‑functionally in a complex organization.
Ability to work independently, proactively, and be pragmatic and results‑focused.
Strong problem‑solving skills with creativity and initiative.
Strong written and verbal communication skills; able to collaborate and communicate with stakeholders at all levels.
Compensation and Benefits
Base compensation range $152,700 to $267,300. Eligible for company bonus, long‑term incentive compensation, and or company vehicle depending on level.
