Overview

The Equal Rights Training Specialist plans, coordinates and implements equal employment opportunity training programs for NYC Public Schools employees to orient staff and improve equal opportunity and diversity awareness. The role may supervise the OEO Training and Outreach Unit, including covering for other training specialists and reviewing unit work, ensuring deadlines are met, and preparing reports and summaries.

Key Relationships

Division of Human Resources (DHR), Office of Legal Services, Central and school-based staff, students and parents/guardians.
Responsibilities

Addresses requests for various kinds of Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) and diversity training for Central and school-based staff.
Monitors employee training to ensure staff meet minimum EEO training requirements of the NYCPS in line with City, State and Federal guidelines.
Prepares resource materials used for various training venues.
Maintains a reference library of relevant training materials.
Conducts EEO trainings for all NYCPS employees across five boroughs.
Assists in disseminating and implementing rules, regulations, procedures, and guidelines for reviewing internal complaints of alleged discrimination pursuant to Chancellor’s Regulation A-830.
Provides technical assistance and support in all matters concerning EEO trainings and allegations of discrimination and complaint review.
Receives, processes, and investigates complaints of discrimination and sexual harassment from students, staff, parents, and third parties. Conducts interviews of all relevant parties and may require travel to schools in all five boroughs.
Analyzes complaints, develops investigative plans, conducts fact finding, reviews documents, conducts related research, and prepares related correspondence.
Drafts and submits confidential reports containing investigative findings.
Qualifications

A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and three years of full-time satisfactory professional experience in one or more of: equal employment opportunity, human rights, community relations, law, social services, education, investigation, human resources or public relations.
A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and seven years of full-time satisfactory professional experience as described above; or
Education and/or experience equivalent to the above. However, all candidates must have a four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent.
Special Note

To be eligible for placement in Assignment Level II, individuals must have, in addition to meeting the minimum qualification requirements, one year of supervisory experience in one of the fields listed above or one year of experience as an Equal Rights Compliance Specialist – AL I.
Preferred

Strong writing, negotiation, and organizational skills.
Salary

$73,380 - $79,133
