
Van Driver

Job Summary
Picks up and delivers students to and from school in a manner that ensures their safety and promotes a positive attitude toward learning. Projects a positive, cooperative, and respectful attitude with community members, parents, students, and other employees. Monitors the working condition of the van and completes necessary work orders as needed. Completes daily inspections and paperwork. Creates a positive rapport while ensuring safe transportation and the well-being of students.
Assignment
CLBESP – 9 Month Position
Performance Responsibilities
The duties are normal for this classification and may not be all-inclusive; other duties may be required and assigned.
Drive assigned van routes, transporting students to and from school while ensuring safety and well-being.
Maintain order and discipline. Write necessary paperwork following discipline guidelines and deliver to the Transportation Director.
Complete required visual inspections and mileage/maintenance records. Monitor the van’s condition, perform daily cleaning, and handle necessary paperwork. Complete inspections per district and DOT requirements. Attend monthly safety meetings.
Attend meetings, including monthly driver safety meetings, health and safety meetings, and student disciplinary meetings within the district when necessary.
Critical Skills/Expertise
Physical Involvement: Position requires extended periods of sitting and extended repetitive motions of steering and opening/shutting doors.
Mental Involvement: Ability to drive safely in all weather conditions, manage noise, distractions, and interruptions while in traffic, complete the route correctly and safely within a time frame. Some conflict resolution is required.
Working Conditions
Subject to occasionally working in unfavorable weather conditions, contact with bodily fluids, and dealing with student temperaments. Engine and student noise are a constant part of the position. Exposure to exhaust fumes can be an issue.
Supervision of Other Employees
Maintains order and discipline in the van while driving. Follows the district's discipline plan. This position initiates necessary documentation regarding student discipline to the Director of Transportation. Position does not include supervision of other employees.
Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent.
Defensive driving course and working knowledge of bus operations preferred.
Ability to work with children.
Certification/Licensure required: Must be able to obtain a valid DOT physical and have less than three moving violations in the past five years.
Must be able to obtain the certification in First Aid/CPR.
Must complete the necessary application process and pass a criminal background check and drug screening test.
