Summary of job description
The Site Safety and Health Officer (SSHO) is responsible for implementing, monitoring, and enforcing the project‑specific Accident Prevention Plan (APP) and Site Safety and Health Plan (SSHP) for environmental remediation activities involving hazardous soil excavation and handling, site clearing and grubbing, underground utility installation, and construction of treatment facilities. The SSHO ensures compliance with OSHA regulations, USACE EM 385‑1‑1, and applicable federal, state, and local environmental and safety requirements while coordinating closely with the project manager, superintendent, and subcontractors to identify hazards and implement effective controls. Duties include conducting daily safety inspections, leading safety briefings and Activity Hazard Analysis (AHA) reviews, overseeing air monitoring and exposure assessments for hazardous substances, verifying proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and maintaining site safety documentation. The SSHO has the authority to Stop Work for unsafe conditions and is responsible for investigating incidents, implementing corrective actions, and promoting a proactive safety culture to protect workers, the public, and the environment during all phases of remediation and construction activities.
Salary
$115K - $130K annually, commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Minimum qualifications
5 years of construction or remediation safety with 1 year of experience on inactive hazardous waste sites
40 Hour HazWOpER, 8 Hour HazWOpER Supervisor, 40‑hour EM385‑1‑1, 30 Hour OSHA
Experience with USACE, USEPA, Department of Defense, and similar
Training and presenting safety programs and concepts to team members
Preferred qualifications
4‑year degree in Industrial Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or Occupational Safety related course of study
Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) credential CHST, OHST, ASP, or CSP
Institute of Hazardous Material Management (IHMM) CSHM
Board of Global Credentialing American Board of Industrial Hygiene (BGC/ABIH) CIH
