Position Overview
The Geriatric Nursing Assistant provides direct resident care in accordance with established care plans and facility policies. Responsibilities include assisting residents with daily activities, monitoring resident condition, maintaining a safe environment, and ensuring compliance with infection control and safety standards. This position may involve tasks that require exposure to visible blood contamination or reasonably anticipated blood exposure and must be performed in compliance with OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Standards and the facility's Exposure Control Plan.

Key Responsibilities
Resident Care

Provide direct care and assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs) including bathing, grooming, dressing, toileting, oral hygiene, and feeding.

Assist residents with mobility, transfers, repositioning, and ambulation using appropriate safety techniques and equipment.

Lift, rotate, and assist residents who may be partially or totally dependent for movement.

Change bedding, mattresses, and assist with maintaining resident room environments.

Operate medical and resident care equipment including wheelchairs, lifting devices, mechanized beds, and related equipment.

Provide restorative care activities including range of motion exercises, positioning, and ambulation as directed by the nursing staff.

Resident Safety and Monitoring

Observe residents and report changes in physical, emotional, or mental condition immediately to the Staff Nurse.

Identify safety hazards or emergency situations and initiate corrective action according to facility policies and procedures.

Respond promptly and respectfully to resident requests for assistance and call lights.

Infection Control and Safety

Follow all infection control protocols, including proper hand hygiene and handling of linens and personal items.

Comply with OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Standards and the facility Exposure Control Plan.

Report signs or symptoms of infection or improper infection control practices to the supervising nurse.

Documentation and Communication

Document resident care activities accurately and in a timely manner when required.

Communicate resident concerns, family feedback, or other observations to the Staff Nurse.

Maintain effective communication with interdisciplinary care teams.

Resident Engagement

Assist residents to meals, activities, and social functions as assigned.

Encourage positive social interaction among residents.

Support facility activity programs and resident engagement initiatives.

Team Participation

Attend and participate in facility in-service training and educational programs.

Assist in the orientation of new or temporary staff members as requested.

Seek assistance from the Staff Nurse when addressing resident issues requiring special attention.

Additional Duties

Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by the Staff Nurse or facility leadership to support quality resident care.

Physical Requirements

This position requires good physical and mental health and the ability to perform the physical demands of resident care.

Lifting and repositioning residents

Assisting residents with mobility and transfers

Stooping, bending, standing, and walking for extended periods

Operating resident care equipment

GNAs must be able to work flexible shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications

Completion of a Maryland-approved Geriatric Nursing Assistant training program

Active Maryland GNA certification

Ability to perform duties in accordance with state and federal healthcare regulations

Strong interpersonal and communication skills

Compassionate and respectful approach to resident care

Training Requirements

Individuals hired as GNA trainees must:

Be enrolled in an approved training program

Successfully complete the training program and competency examinations

Achieve certification within 120 days of employment, in accordance with Maryland statutory requirements

Knowledge and Skills

Resident care practices in long-term care settings

Proper infection prevention and control techniques

Safe lifting and resident handling practices

Residents' rights and dignity standards

OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen safety procedures

Documentation and reporting standards
