Job Purpose
The Tech 3 Mechanic is responsible for performing routine maintenance, conducting daily inspections, and executing minor repairs and reworks to ensure the reliability and safety of transit vehicles. This role supports production standards and plays a vital part in maintaining the efficiency and safety of the transit system. By ensuring vehicles operate safely and reliably, the Tech 3 Mechanic directly contributes to the safety and well‑being of passengers who depend on public transit for their daily commutes.

Perform vehicle maintenance and repairs to company standards
Inspect, diagnose, and complete all phases of vehicle/equipment repairs including engine emissions, driveline, transmission, electrical/electronic systems, HVAC, brakes, suspension, exhaust, hydraulics, ADA equipment, tires, and other bus/body accessories
Complete accurate work orders and select proper repair actions
Use hand/power tools, vehicle lifts, and forklifts safely
Perform road calls, roadside testing, and emergency services as needed
Move vehicles safely between work areas
Communicate professionally with supervisors, team members, and customers
Participate in required safety and educational training
May perform duties outside of classification as needed
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent required; technical training preferred
1 year of progressive heavy equipment maintenance preferred
Transit or heavy‑duty fleet repair experience preferred
Experience with diesel PM schedules and shop equipment
Cummins ISL/ISB experience and RTA software knowledge preferred
ASE certifications preferred (or obtained within 6 months): H2, H3, H4, H5, H6, H7
Must have tools up to 1” (wrenches/sockets)
Must obtain and maintain a valid NC CDL with Passenger endorsement (training provided)
Requirements
Pass pre‑employment physical, drug/alcohol test, background, and driving record check
No criminal convictions (DWI, DUI, assault, or controlled substances) in last 5 years
Able to use maintenance software and complete accurate records
Available for flexible schedules, including nights, weekends, and snow days
Must be able to:
Lift 50 lbs to waist, carry 35 lbs
Climb ladders/stairs
Lie on mechanic’s dolly
Work in crouched/stooped positions under vehicles
Tolerate dust, dirt, grease, and hot/cold/wet environments
Sit or stand for extended periods
Write clear, legible reports
