Job Summary
The RN’s practice is guided by the ANA Standard for Professional Nurse and the Code of Ethics. The RN has knowledge of professional nursing principles, practices, concepts, and procedures as applied to the care of the patient population served. The RN records patients' medical history and symptoms, helps perform diagnostic tests and analyzes results, operates medical equipment, administers treatment and medications, and assists with patient follow‑up and rehabilitation. The RN establishes a care plan or contributes to an existing plan, which may include administering medication, managing intravenous lines, applying therapies, recording observations, and consulting with physicians and other healthcare clinicians. The RN teaches patients and families how to manage conditions, explains post‑treatment home care, diet, nutrition, exercise programs, and self‑administration of medication and therapy. The RN provides direction to licensed practical nurses and nursing aides, delegating tasks when appropriate. The RN supports clinical knowledge advancement, precepts new staff and students, assists them in completing competency tasks, and continuously enhances knowledge in nursing management and patient care. The RN promotes a healthy work environment, exemplary patient experience, and clinical outcomes based on evidence‑based nursing practice and a shared governance model.

All RN staff who have direct responsibility for the care of stroke patients must have knowledge of:

Stroke symptoms and warning signs

Protocols and pathways used to identify, evaluate and manage stroke patients

NIHSS

Stroke alert activation and protocol

Stroke quality indicators

Available stroke patient education materials and community resources

Educational requirements

Stroke center website resources

Essential Functions

Collect health data systematically, prioritizing according to patient condition and involving family, analyze assessment data to determine diagnoses, and develop, implement, evaluate, and adjust an appropriate, family‑centered, developmental, culturally relevant plan of care.

Identify expected outcomes individualized to the patient and specific health problems; develop plans of care that are evidence‑based and ensure continuity of care.

Implement interventions, initiate treatments, medications, and emergency or resuscitative measures based on standing orders, policies, and procedures; provide comprehensive nursing care to meet physical, emotional, spiritual, and social‑cultural needs.

Evaluate the patient’s progress toward attainment of outcomes, document observations, interventions, and data in a retrievable form, and continually evaluate care plan effectiveness to maintain and enhance patient outcomes.

Evaluate personal nursing practice relative to professional standards, statutes, regulations, and policies, maintaining current knowledge and systematically assessing practice quality.

Integrate ethical principles and enhance understanding of cultural and diversity needs for specific populations.

Collaborate with peers and multidisciplinary teams in professional development at institutional and regional levels, fostering roles as partners, mentors, and positive role models.

Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care delivery; work with patients, families, and other health‑care providers to provide patient care.

Develop and evaluate evidence‑based standards of care, identify necessary changes, and facilitate adoption of new practices, using research to improve nursing and patient outcomes.

Consider safety, effectiveness, and cost in planning and delivering patient care, utilizing all resources effectively and efficiently.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) - Preferred

All Diploma and ADN hires must complete a BSN within 60 months of hire or have 5+ years of RN experience (direct or indirect) at the time of hire - Required

Associate’s degree or Diploma in Nursing. All staff with direct responsibility for the care of stroke patients must refer to the stroke education addendum prior to start - Required

Experience

>10 months med‑surg or acute specialty setting - Required

1 year RN experience for all Float Positions - Required

Licenses and Certifications

Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification and unit‑specific certification as required by specialty area - Required

Registered Nurse (RN) State or Compact State licensure in Arizona upon hire - Required

National certification for unit‑specific patient population - Preferred
