
Registered Nurse - Pre Anesthesia Testing

Summary
Reporting and accountable to the Nurse Manager/Director, the Outpatient Clinical Nurse is responsible for coordinating and delivering patient care utilizing the nursing process in an outpatient setting. Provides competent clinical nursing care consistent with professional standards. The Clinical Nurse is also responsible for coordinating and delivering patient care utilizing the nursing process in a hospital setting.
Responsibilities
Assess patients attending the outpatient clinic or via phone interview to prepare the patient for anesthesia and the surgical process, including preoperative assessments such as medical and surgical history, current medications, allergies, lab result review/ordering, and overall anesthesia risk evaluation prior to surgery.
Follow the Peri-Anesthesia Testing Guidelines and surgeon orders. In-person clinic patients receive complete physical assessments, including VS and weight.
Develop and implement patient care plans, consults, or review of medical clearance in coordination with surgeons, anesthesia, and other members of the healthcare team to ensure patient safety through the perioperative experience.
Educate patients and their families on procedure prep, NPO status, medications to take or hold, arrival times, postoperative support needs, and emotional support and counseling as indicated.
Collaborate with other healthcare professionals involved in patient care, including cardiologist, pulmonologist, and primary care physicians, and advocate for preventive care measures such as regular screenings, balanced nutrition, and exercise.
Maintain accurate and detailed records of patients’ medical histories, medications, treatments, and progress through the preoperative process, ensuring confidentiality and up-to-date records.
Adhere to all hospital and departmental safety policies and protocols, ensuring compliance with healthcare laws and regulations; stay updated on nursing care advances through continuous learning and professional development.
Advocate for patients’ rights and needs, addressing complaints or concerns and escalating them to management when necessary.
Administer patient care under the direction of a physician and pursue expected patient outcomes in collaboration with the interdisciplinary care team.
Provide competent clinical nursing care consistent with organization and nursing standards, policies, and procedures.
Organize and prioritize care according to patient/family needs, consulting appropriate resources timely for complex care issues and high risk discharge planning.
Collaborate with peers in a clinical operations environment, fostering intra/interdepartmental communication.
Synthesize data from complex situations to determine priorities for care, including physical, psychosocial, educational, and safety needs, and assess and anticipate discharge needs of patients and families.
Communicate with patients and families to prepare or update the plan of care using cultural competency and active listening, developing relationships that promote their ability to advocate for their needs.
Develop clinical and operational excellence in self and peers through education and training.
Promote a safe, clean, and secure hospital environment for all, applying standard precautions and principles of infection control.
Required Qualifications
Must be licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of North Carolina or one of the compact states by the first day of clinical care.
Must be graduated from an accredited school of nursing.
Current BLS certification required for all roles.
Hired candidates are required to hold relevant certifications as per clinical area.
Preferred Qualifications
2–3 years of relevant experience.
