Location: Northeast Region, Deer Park, WA. Full‑time, Permanent, represented position (WPEA). Salary: $3,811.00–$5,117.00 monthly. Work hours may be flexible. Relocation compensation may be available. Recruitment #2026-4-7832.
Responsibilities
Fire Suppression
Work as a Wildland Fire Engine Leader supervising three firefighters, responsible for assigning and directing positions in daily activities.
Develop and implement a daily routine for the engine and crew.
Participate in statewide fire suppression activities.
Protect life, property, infrastructure, and natural resources from wildland and urban interface fires to minimize loss and costs while ensuring safety.
Often required to work long, irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, day or night; duty may involve strenuous activities in adverse conditions.
Coordinate work with other fire protection agencies and write mutual aid contracts between fighters and equipment.
Forest Health
Prescribed Fire Implementation and Support -
Review burn plans, conduct prescribed fire monitoring, collect site fuels and fire effects data, prepare units, assist with burn plan writing, conduct community outreach, and support Rx burn implementation, including firing, holding, burn boss functions; serve as prescribed fire lead for burn activities on and off DNR state trust lands.
Fuels Mitigation -
Provide non-commercial thinning and slash abatement, and commercial and non-commercial project assistance in coordination with Service Forestry, Federal Lands, or State Lands staff; provide support for walking and flagging fuels treatment areas.
Community Wildland Fire Prevention/Preparedness
Conduct hazard risk assessments at single residence and community levels.
Work on fuel reduction assignments.
Construct, maintain, and post fire prevention signs.
Participate in cooperative group fire prevention and preparedness education activities.
Perform public speaking about fire prevention activities to groups, including school children, homeowners, and at events as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Two years’ experience in wildland fire management, natural resource, forestry, or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Any NWCG Single Resource Boss qualification.
Experience supervising or leading wildland firefighting personnel.

Special Requirements and Conditions of Employment
The position’s duty station is the Deer Park work center. Work is performed 40% in an office setting and 60% in isolated, unimproved natural areas; the incumbent must traverse uneven terrain in all weather conditions, requiring above‑average endurance and conditioning.
Position will be assigned an agency vehicle; significant driving and field visits within the geographic area are required.
A current, valid driver’s license and two years of driving experience; drivers must have a license that is not suspended, revoked, or restricted. The position requires driving as an essential function.
Desired Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Science, Natural Resources, Forestry, or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
NWCG qualifications: Incident Commander Type 4, Strike Team Leader or Task Force Leader, Wildland Fire Investigator, Multiple Single Resource Boss qualifications, Prescribed Fire Burn Boss 2 (RXB2), Fire Effects Monitoring (FEMO), and Firing Boss (FIRB).
Experience with prescribed fire operations, burn plan writing, DNR burn permit regulations, silvicultural techniques to improve habitat, and monitoring or data collection for fire effects, forest insects and disease, and forest health conditions.
