Job Title: Patient Care Technician II

Under the direction of the appropriate licensed clinician, the Patient Care Technician II provides patient care to meet the personal needs and comfort of patients and assists members of the healthcare team.

Responsibilities

Provides clear, timely communication to the RN regarding observations and changes seen in patients, such as changes in skin condition, vital signs, and/or mental status.

Provides constant observation of high‑risk patients as assigned by the Resource Nurse or designee.

Participates in the development and maintenance of a safe environment, using interventions to de‑escalate patients and, if unsuccessful, participates in restraints in accordance with training and education.

Assists patients with daily living activities including personal hygiene, ambulation, meals, and nourishment.

Assists in moving, lifting, positioning, and transporting patients using proper safety techniques and body mechanics.

Maintains patient safety by performing safety checks, utilizing fall prevention devices or strategies, and following the Restraint Policy when caring for a restrained patient.

Takes and records vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, pulse oximetry); measures and records patient height and weight.

Performs EKGs, point‑of‑care tests, and bladder scanning; collects, labels, and prepares specimens for lab transport.

Performs other unit‑specific procedures such as battery changes for telemetry units, checking status of unit equipment, cleaning equipment between patients, and proper storage of supplies.

Assists RN or licensed practitioner with treatments and procedures by preparing patients, obtaining equipment and supplies, positioning patients, providing emotional support, and cleaning up equipment afterward.

Observes, measures, and records oral food and fluid intake; prepares full‑strength tube‑feeding solutions and refills tube‑feeding bags; empties and records output from various drainage systems; performs ostomy care on established ostomate patients.

Demonstrates sensitivity and responsiveness to patients’ needs, providing information and building positive rapport.

Provides respectful, culturally and age‑appropriate communication with patients, staff, family, visitors, and others.

Replenishes patient and unit supplies and equipment as needed.

Requests assistance from designated resources when more direction is required.

Stays current with hospital and unit changes by reading communication boards, bulletin boards, and emails on a regular basis.

Has the ability to precept new Patient Care Technicians.

Complies with established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives.

Attends required meetings, conferences, and seminars.

Demonstrates use of quality improvement in daily operations.

Complies with all health and safety regulations.

Respects diverse views, demonstrates standards of respect, and contributes to a professional, tolerant, and inclusive environment.

Maintains reliable attendance.

Performs other related responsibilities as required or directed.

Qualifications

Minimum of a high school diploma or GED.

Current Basic Life Support certification.

Demonstrated competency attainment in the Patient Care Technician I level, with a minimum of 800 hours and at least six months of experience.

Prior inpatient or outpatient care experience or clinical training.

Ability to read, write, and communicate in English clearly and concisely.

Basic computer skills and medical terminology knowledge.

Strong interpersonal skills for building relationships and providing exceptional service to patients.

Proven problem‑solving abilities for routine situations.

Ability to remain calm under stress or emergencies.

Physical Demands & Environmental Conditions
Work indoors in a patient care environment. Requires hand dexterity, hearing, and vision to take direction and observe patient status. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Work is heavily demanding, requiring frequent standing, walking, pushing heavy equipment, and bending.
