
Patient Care Technician - Emergency Department

Job Summary
Geisinger offers a Patient Care Tech a $1,500 sign‑on bonus for eligible candidates, a minimum hiring rate of $18.94 with increased rates for experienced individuals and up to $3 shift differentials for evening, night, and weekend shifts. Up to $40,000 in financial support is available to become a nurse.
Responsibilities
Perform a wide variety of advanced patient care duties under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and maintain the patient care and unit environment consistent with policies, procedures, and practices.
Provide enhanced patient care under the direction of the licensed nurse, which may include advanced dressing care, suctioning, removal of Foley catheters, and peripheral IVs.
Perform venipunctures and skin punctures to obtain blood specimens according to Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines.
Perform daily, hands‑on aspects of the storage, preparation, and delivery of breast milk, infant, and pediatric formulas.
Document in the appropriate sections to create a complete and accurate medical record.
Identify, observe, and document the physical needs of patients according to established standards; report any changes in patient condition to licensed personnel promptly.
Obtain and maintain the integrity of specimens in accordance with policy and procedure, according to physician order.
Assist patients with activities of daily living, patient hygiene, and changing linens.
Provide one‑to‑one patient safety watch as assigned following established policies and procedures.
Accurately process specimens and provide timely transport of the specimen to the laboratory.
Perform point‑of‑care patient testing and instrument maintenance and quality control.
Assist in problem solving, troubleshooting, and taking corrective measures in care and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
Serve as a preceptor and mentor for new staff and students in a positive manner.
Perform clerical duties for admissions, transfers, discharges, and deaths according to standards and facilitate patient throughput activities; transcribe and process orders according to unit standards.
Release and confirm ordered tests to appropriate departments.
Coordinate transportation of patients to multiple tests.
Participate in obtaining and communicating electronic information pertinent to the nursing unit; schedule tests, faxes consult, etc.
Assist in ordering supplies, stationery items, floor stock, patient needs, and individual nursing supplies.
Communicate with food services to ensure appropriate patient diets.
Operate, problem‑solve, and take corrective measures for clerical equipment, including scheduling maintenance of computers, fax machines, and phones.
Transport non‑controlled medications as necessary to meet the needs of the clinic or unit.
Assist with transporting non‑controlled medications to and from the pharmacy and within the unit as needed.
Assist with transporting blood products to and from the Blood Bank as needed.
Conduct discharge follow‑up phone calls and coordinate virtual discharge appointments.
Support or assist staff with 5‑minute drills and/or quality rounds; participate in regulatory readiness as needed.
Position Details
Education
High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED) – Required.
Graduate from Specialty Training Program – Preferred.
Experience
Minimum of 1 year of related work experience – Preferred.
Certification
Basic Life Support Certification within 6 months – Default Issuing Body.
