Description :
Position is grant funded. Provides expertise in support of research projects in engineering, biology, mathematics, statistics, computer science, physics, etc. Prepares and edits research papers, proposals, and reports. Performs advanced testing procedures and analyses of data. May prepare samples for testing. Uses a variety of specialized equipment typical within area of specialization. May contribute to grant proposal development.
Duties and Responsibilities
Conduct extensive array of animal behavioral testing paradigms and procedures (Morris Water Maze, Elevated Plus Maze, Y-Maze)
Collate data and manage research databases
Administer compounds via various routes (e.g., intra-peritoneal, intra-venous, subcutaneous, intranasal) and perform venous blood draws
Perform biochemical assays including Western Blot and ELISA
Operate the MouseOx Plus pulse oximetry system for real-time physiological monitoring; experience running multiple simultaneous assays required
Collect, statistically analyze, graph, and interpret results using EthoVision, GraphicState, and Microsoft Excel
Manage and share data with lab members via Microsoft Teams/OneDrive
Help implement new techniques and procedures depending on grant goals
General laboratory maintenance and restocking consumables through online system
Required Education
Bachelor of Science degree preferably in Animal Science
Required Experience
At least 3 years of experience as a Researcher or Research Assistant in an academic laboratory setting
Extensive animal handling experience
Experience working with both rats and mice and conducting minor surgery
Proficiency in EthoVision, GraphicState, and MouseOx Plus pulse oximetry system
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Teams, and OneDrive for data analysis and collaborative data management
Additional Requirements
All positions at the University of Houston-System are security sensitive and will require a criminal history check.
Compliance with all governmental and University of Houston policies, rules, regulations and codes, and maintenance of all training certifications required to work with animals and conduct experiments in a laboratory.
