Job Summary
The Operating Room (OR) Registered Nurse (RN) is a licensed professional. The RN uses the BSWH nursing model to coordinate patient care, assesses patients, identifies nursing diagnoses, develops and implements individualized care plans, and evaluates patient response. The RN promotes safe passage for patients by using knowledge of patient needs and helps patients transition through healthcare without preventable complications or delays. The RN delegates interventions based on the Texas Nursing Practice Act, patient condition, and employee competencies.
Essential Functions Of The Role
Clinical Judgment: Conducts accurate assessments, identifies and prioritizes patient and family needs, and develops, implements, and evaluates the nursing care plan, modifying it to meet outcomes.
Clinical Inquiry: Evaluates the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice, supports evidence‑based practice changes, and participates in quality improvement initiatives.
Caring Practices: Creates an attentive, helpful, safe, and therapeutic environment, develops therapeutic relationships, manages pain to promote healing, and prevents unnecessary suffering.
Response to Diversity: Recognizes and appreciates a patient’s and family’s unique differences, incorporating culture, beliefs, gender, race, ethnicity, lifestyle, status, age, and values into a care plan.
Advocacy and Moral Agency: Protects the confidentiality, autonomy, dignity, and rights of patients and families, and creates individualized plans reflecting their values and goals.
Facilitation of Learning: Facilitates learning for patients, families, nursing staff, health‑care team, and community, integrating education throughout care.
Partnership: Works with colleagues and community to create and implement a care plan, delegates tasks appropriately, and ensures timely follow‑up.
Systems Thinking: Uses strategies and resources for problem‑solving, considers limited resources, and focuses on safety, effectiveness, and efficiency in patient care.
Key Success Factors
Knowledge and expertise of nursing and patient care standards and procedures.
Knowledge of laws, rules, and regulations; understanding of standards and guidelines of certifying and accrediting bodies; adherence to hospital and department/unit protocols and policies for nursing care.
Knowledge of medical terminology, health promotion, risk reduction, disease prevention and management, medication knowledge, common dosages, effects, and possible adverse reactions.
Knowledge of professional nursing ethics and patient privacy rights.
Clear verbal and written communication skills.
Social skills to interact with diverse constituencies.
Critical thinking and problem‑solving skills.
Monitoring changes in patients’ medical conditions and communicating them to nursing staff and physicians/providers.
Ability to provide age‑specific, quality, patient‑centered care through nursing process and standards, respecting diversity of human experience.
General computer skills: Microsoft Office, information security, scheduling and payroll systems, electronic medical documentation, and email.

Education: Graduate of an accredited program or at least 2 years of work experience above the minimum qualification.
Major: Nursing.
Experience: 2 years of experience.
Certification / License / Registration
Registered Nurse (RN).
Basic Life Support (BLS): BLS or BLS within 30 days of hire or transfer.
