Summary
5S is a 13‑bed unit combined with 5W 27 remote telemetry and epilepsy monitoring beds. The unit cares for a wide range of patients – oncology, stroke, COPD, complex wounds, dementia, and respiratory infections. It operates with teamwork and collaboration among supervisors, nurses, and nursing assistants. We currently have multiple vacancies for nursing assistant positions in this unit. Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements

United States Citizenship: Non‑citizens may be appointed only when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Six months of general experience, or

Experience demonstrating the ability to acquire the knowledge and skills to perform the work of a NA, or

One year of education above high school with courses related to the NA occupation, or

Completion of an intensive, specialized, occupation‑related training course or program of less than one year. Nursing Assistants must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005.

May qualify based on the Grandfathering Provision for current VHA employees who meet the criteria.

Grade Determinations

GS‑3: Experience and Education.

GS‑4: One year of specialized experience as a NA or experience in another medical field (licensed practical nurse, health technician, hospital corpsman, etc.)

OR Education: Successful completion of 2 years above high school in a related field.

GS‑5: One year of progressively responsible assignments equivalent to the GS‑4 level.

OR Education: Successful completion of a 4‑year bachelor’s degree with relevant coursework.

Relevant KSAs: Ability to provide a range of patient care, observe and refer deviations, use equipment, communicate effectively, and assist as preceptor.

May qualify based on the Grandfathering Provision.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS‑05; the actual grade may be in the range GS‑03 to GS‑05.

Physical Requirements

Visual acuity, keen hearing, clear speech, and manual dexterity.

Long periods of walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing.

Transferring patients and objects may be required.

Exposure to infected patients and contaminated materials; protective clothing may be required.

Possible exposure to combative patients due to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders.

Must be mature, flexible, sensible, and able to work effectively in stressful situations and shift priorities.

Annual employee health requirements such as TB screening as a condition of employment.

Duties

Maintain a therapeutic relationship, display respect, and communicate effectively with patients, families, and others.

Provide direct care for complex veterans, making observations of subtle changes in condition.

Report patient status to nursing staff and document observations in medical records.

Apply external urinary devices, perform sterile and non‑sterile catheterizations, irrigate indwelling catheters, and care for wounds.

Collect basic patient data, obtain vital signs, specimens, suction, phlebotomy, and administer oxygen.

Institute emergency and safety measures, maintain a safe and clean environment, check equipment, and send broken items for maintenance.

Participate in shift reports, safety huddles, and contribute to nursing care plan development.

Competent with personal hygiene, physical comfort, activity, nutrition, elimination, prevention of skin breakdown, and rehabilitative aspects of care.

Work schedule: Day and night shifts, 12 hours rotating.

Pay and Benefits

Pay: Competitive salary with possible higher step rate; step increases based on qualifications.

Paid Time Off: 104 hours of annual PTO per year, 13 days sick leave, 11 paid federal holidays.

Credit toward annual leave accrual based on prior work or military service.
