
Postdoctoral Research Associate - Grid Modeling

Overview
The Power System Resilience (PSR) Group in the Electrification and Energy Infrastructure Division (EEID) within the Energy Science and Technology Directorate (ESTD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seeks a Postdoctoral Research Associate to conduct R&D in electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation, software development, and dynamic inverter modeling for energy security and grid resilience.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Develop electromagnetic transient (EMT) models for transmission or distribution grids, synchronous generators, large loads, and transmission networks.
Design simulation algorithms that enable large-scale simulations.
Integrate (or co-simulate) grid component/device models into open-source software tools for system dynamic and transient simulations.
Integrate post-processing measures for simulation automation.
Align with ORNL core values and promote an inclusive workplace.
Basic Qualifications
Ph.D. in electrical engineering or a related discipline completed within the last five years.
Expertise in power systems and power electronics.
Experience with C/C++, MATLAB, and Python programming.
Experience with power-systems software such as PSCAD and PSS/e.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with real-time simulation hardware such as Opal-RT and RTDS.
Knowledge of GPU, multi-core CPU, and advanced computing (e.g., QPUs).
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Self-motivated, independent, and collaborative.
Ability to thrive in a fast-paced research environment and meet deadlines.
Special Requirements
Applicants must have completed their Ph.D. within the last five years and must complete all degree requirements before starting. The appointment is up to 24 months with potential extension.
