Minimum Experience/Education

High school diploma or equivalency and one year of laboratory experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Some positions may require compliance with current Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) Regulations.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

Graduation from an accredited MLT /MT/ MLS program and successful completion of a national certification exam by the American Society for Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or equivalent agency.

Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Chemistry, Biological Science, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Minimum of one year of clinical laboratory experience preferred.

Knowledge of laboratory principles, procedures, and communication skills typically acquired through formal training and professional experience.

Required License Or Certification

Graduation from an accredited MLT /MT/ MLS program with successful completion of a national certification exam administered by the ASCP Board of Registry or an equivalent agency.

Position Overview
Primary Purpose Of Position

This position supports patient care by providing accurate medical laboratory diagnostic and therapeutic information. The role is responsible for performing routine laboratory tests on human body fluids and tissues to generate reliable data for the healthcare team. The individual ensures compliance with quality assurance and quality control standards, evaluates the accuracy of test results, monitors instrument performance, assesses specimen suitability, and applies sound clinical judgment in all aspects of testing.

Work Hours

Monday-Friday 10am - 7pm (Hours may vary)

Required Competency

Knowledge - Technical

Performs accurate specimen testing, evaluates acceptability, verifies results, and reports within established timeframes, including critical values.

Maintains quality by following laboratory protocols, quality control procedures, and documenting discrepancies.

Conducts instrument and equipment maintenance, troubleshoots issues, and ensures safe, clean, and stocked work areas.

Manages laboratory information systems, ensures data security/confidentiality, and maintains compliance with HIPAA and public health regulations.

Schedules, assigns, and follows up on staff work; fosters positive interactions with staff, patients, and the public.

Maintains professional knowledge through continuing education, networking, and participation in professional societies.

Required Competency

Laboratory Operations

Ensures optimal laboratory equipment performance by establishing quality standards, developing procedures, verifying instrument certification, and coordinating service, repair, or replacement.

Manages laboratory supplies inventory and ordering to maintain adequate stock levels.

Supports quality assurance by consulting with pathologists, completing proficiency surveys, reviewing QC/QA programs, generating reports, and maintaining accurate records.

Participates in the American Proficiency Institute (API) Testing Program and daily/weekly Quality Control (QC) activities; interprets results, documents peer comparisons, and implements corrective actions when needed.

Prepares and maintains laboratory compliance for CLIA, COLA, and AAAHC inspections.

Acts as primary liaison with reference laboratory representatives, vendors, and the Student Health Center.

Coordination - Work

Maintains laboratory productivity by monitoring workloads, identifying peak/slack periods, and adjusting operations or staffing as needed.

Implements new programs, tests, methods, instrumentation, and procedures by evaluating alternatives, preparing proposals, conducting validation testing, and monitoring outcomes.

Ensures compliance with state licensure and continuing education requirements by providing in-service training and monitoring results.

Supports billing processes by submitting service requests, verifying billed units, and providing accurate service codes to the billing office.

Required Competency

Data Collection/Analysis

Accurately records scientific observations, prepares reports, and adheres to safety precautions.

Performs standardized hematology and chemistry tests, including complete blood counts on the ABX Micros 60, and point-of-care testing (finger sticks for glucose and cholesterol using Accu-Chek).

Conducts phlebotomy and specimen collection as required.

Performs and documents quality control (QC) testing for various assays, including Strep A, Chlamydia, glucose, cholesterol, Gram stains, and cultures.

Reads and interprets wet preps, hematology differential slides, Gram stains, and KOH preps.

Analyzes statistical procedures, interprets Levy-Jennings graphs, and initiates corrective actions when necessary.
