A Credentialed Veterinary Technician (Vet Tech) is a highly skilled professional who works alongside veterinarians to ensure the health and well‑being of animals. Vet Techs are integral to clinic operations, participating in a wide range of responsibilities beyond basic care.
Medical Procedures Assistance: Participate in surgeries, anesthesia monitoring, and diagnostic imaging, handling complex clinical tasks with advanced training.
Laboratory Work: Conduct laboratory tests such as blood work and urinalysis to support diagnostic decision‑making.
Patient Care and Monitoring: Provide post‑operative care, monitor vital signs, administer medications, and ensure animal comfort and recovery.
Educating Pet Owners: Communicate post‑treatment care, medication administration, and preventive health measures to pet owners, fostering collaboration in animal wellbeing.
Expanded Duties & Responsibilities
Assist in surgical procedures, prepare the OR, handle instruments, and support veterinarians during surgery.
Monitor anesthesia and ensure safety during procedures.
Collect blood samples, perform hematological analyses, and interpret results to aid diagnoses.
Perform and interpret diagnostic imaging such as X‑rays.
Oversee patient recovery, administer medications, and monitor vital signs post‑surgery.
Administer medications as prescribed, ensuring correct dosage and monitoring for reactions.
Educate pet owners on post‑treatment care, wound care, and signs of complications.
Provide guidance on preventive health, nutrition, and routine care to empower pet owners.

Education and Training:
Associate degree in veterinary technology from an accredited program.
Sit for or successfully pass a national licensing exam.
Skills and Attributes:
Strong foundation in science, effective communication, and genuine compassion for animals.
Detail‑oriented, capable of multitasking, and able to handle the emotional aspects of animal healthcare.
Certification and Licensure
Meet state licensing requirements (VTNE is a common requirement). Earn one of the titles: RVT, LVT, or CVT.
Complete continuing education to maintain licensure.
