Responsibilities
Provide direct care to pediatric patients with cardiovascular conditions, including those recovering from heart surgery, congenital heart defects, or severe arrhythmias.
Continuously monitor vital signs, cardiac rhythms, oxygenation, and other critical parameters; assess changes in condition and respond appropriately.
Administer medications (including IV drips, blood products, and sedatives) according to protocol; monitor for side effects and adjust dosages as needed.
Assist with ventilator management and ensure proper airway management for non-invasive and invasive respiratory support.
Assist with procedures like intra-aortic balloon pumps (IABP), external pacemakers, or ECMO as directed by the cardiology team.
Provide clear, compassionate communication with patients’ families, update them on the child’s condition and care plan, and offer emotional support and education to family members.
Respond swiftly to cardiac and respiratory emergencies, including code situations and rapid interventions in acute cardiovascular distress.
Collaborate with pediatric cardiologists, surgeons, respiratory therapists, and other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive care.
Accurately document patient assessments, interventions, changes in condition, and family interactions in the electronic health record (EHR).
Educate families and caregivers on post-operative care, recovery expectations, and signs of complications that may require attention.
Qualifications
At least one year of experience as an RN in a PCICU or similar critical care setting.
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and Basic Life Support (BLS) certifications are required. Additional certifications may be required. Must be eligible for state licensure.
PCICU Nurses should be able to stand or walk for long periods and must be able to bend, stoop, and lift with proper body mechanics. They should have exceptional critical thinking skills, strong communication abilities, and the ability to provide compassionate care under pressure. They must be comfortable working with critically ill pediatric patients and supporting families through emotionally challenging situations.
Requirements:
BLS, PALS, 1 Year.
